LADIES’ DAY. The annual ladies’ day fixture was held by the members and friends of the Dunedin Gun Club at the club’s grounds, Green Island, on Saturday afternoon, and attracted a large attendance. Pleasant weather conditions added to the success of the afternoon and excellent trapshooting was witnessed. Before proceedings commenced Mrs G. E. Turner drew from the “ hat ” a lady’s name to represent each competitor, and the winners of the five trophy prizes allotted to the contest were concealed all through the match, only three birds being missed in the final round.
The contest consisted of 12 clay birds from handicap marks, and best results were: A. King (15yds) 12, T. Long (11yds) 12, J. A. Graham (17yds) 12, G. E. Turner (20yds) 11, E. P. Graham (23yds) 11, W. M'Breen (13yds) 11, S. Geddes (12yds) 11, W. Morland (12yds) 11, A. A. Fairbairn (12yds) 11, C. H. Law (11yds) 11, R. M'Donald (20yds) 10, T. Callaghan (15yds) 10, J. K. Geddes (11yds) 9, A. Watson (11yds) 9, G. R. M'Kenzie (11yds) 8. In the shoot-ofl for prizes, the honour of the day was gained by T. Long on the eighth bird, against J. A. Graham, with A. King third. The seven competitors with 11 breaks each shot off for fourth and fifth prizes, and on the tenth bird, W. Morland was fourth and E. P. Graham fifth. After the adjournment for afternoon tea, dispensed by the ladies, the president (Mr G. E Turner) extended thanks to all present for their support and interest in trap-shooting, and mentioned that the true sporting spirit had been uphold by Mr Long in winning the event, as the runner-up, Mr J. A. Graham, was shooting on behalf of Mrs Long. The prizes were then presented to the winning ladies as follow:—Mrs W. M‘Broen 1, Mrs T. Long 2, Miss Marion Fairbairn 3, Mrs R. M'Donald 4, Mrs J. K. Geddes 5. A nine-bird “ walk-up ” match followed, and although the trap lever was controlled by one of the club’s handicappers (Mr A. Adamson), the members were alert to the different angles and marks. The scores resulted: G. E. Turner 9, S. Geddes 9, C. H. Law 9, E. P. Graham 8, W. M'Breen 8, J. K. Geddes 8, A. Watson 8, T. Callaghan 8. R. M'Donald 7, R. Graham 7, A. A. Fairbairn 7, G. R. M'Kenzie 7, A. J. White 7, A. King 0, J. A. Graham 0, W. Morland 6. The sweepstake was divided between G. E. Turner, S. Geddes, and C. H. Law. The afternoon concluded with a threepair double rise (right and left barrel), and first prize money went to A. A. Fairbairn, who broke all his birds. Five competitors tied with five breaks each, viz.—G. E. Turner, W. M'Breen, J. K. Geddes, A. Watson, C. H. Law —and in the shoot off second money went to A. Watson after breaking a further three pairs.
