ONE MAN ONE JOB

to the editor.

Sir—Your correspondent who signs himself “Pro Bono Publico,” has shown how ignorant and uneducated he is by writing about something he is so deplorably ignorant about. If he has ever had anything to do with the business of a church —and I am sure he has not; perhaps he has never been inside a church —he would never have shown his poor standing in life or his contemptible, petty jealousy. He says that a prominent church employs a caretaker who has a steady job elsewhere, as is the case in most churches. As a church warden of an English denomination I am in the position to state that several churches pay such a very low salary •to a caretaker that it would not keep even a single man. Perhaps “ Pro Bono Publico ” is jealous of another man striving to get ahead, although he himself could not get out of his own way perhaps. It is an absolute farce for any but an otherwise employed man to apply for a position as caretaker, as a caretaker’s job in many instances is not self-supporting by a very long way. “Pro Bono Publico” has forgotten to mention the different secretaries, organists, and other paid officials of churches who receive salaries, but in ( many instances have clean and well paid jobs besides. Having been attached to a church for many years I am able to say that the congregation of my church is proud of our caretaker, who also has a good dean job, and, we realise how fortunate we are in having a man who is intelligent, clean, of good character, and above all, honest and straightforward. Such letters as that written by iPro Bono Publico ” wifi fail to make an inn pression on citizens who are educated and of high standing.—l am, etc., March 19. Not Jealous.
