BRITISH BY-ELECTION
THE DUMBARTON CONTEST WON BY CONSERVATIVE. \ LONDON, March 18. The by-election for the Dumbarton seat, which was occasioned by the appointment of Lieutenant-colonel Thom to an Indian judgeship, respited as follows: Commander A. Cochrane (Con.) 16,749 Mr T. Johnston (Lab.) .. .. 13,714 Mr R. Gray (Scottish Nationalist) .. .. 5,178 l Mr H. MTntyre (Communist) 2,870 Mr Johnston,- the Labour candidate, was Parliamentary Under-secretary, and later Lord Privy Seal in the last Labour Government. He lost his seat at the general election. The Communist candidate lost his deposit.
