This round brought about the elimination of Love, Stuart, Smith, Smellie, Fountain, Anderson, Tait, Hutchison. NOTES ON THE PLAY First Round. Although at the twelfth head the scores in the game between Shepherd and Stewart stood at 11 all. the St. Kilda rink monopolised the scoring from this on, and won by 20 points to 15. Read was extremely lucky to notch 18 points against Deare, and the scores—24 —lB in favour of Deare—were no real indication of the respective merits of the rinks. Love had a runaway win over Barnett, although the hill rink, up to the tenth head was leading. At this stage the scores read 6 —4 in favour of Barnett, but Love drew level on the next end and went on to run out a winner bv 20 points to 0. With 17 heads played, when he had scored 18 to Tonkin’s nine. M'Fadden looked as if he would have matters ail his own way. Tonkin put on six in the last four heads, however, and was down only by 18 points to 15 when the game finished. Second Round. The game between Smith and Veitch was fairly evenly contested until 10 heads had been played, but after this the West Harbour rink piled up the points until the sixteenth head, when the tally read 22 —11 in Veitch’s favour. Smith made a good recovery from this on. and at the conclusion of the game he had scored 2J points to Veitch’s 26. In the initial stages of the game bo-

tween Smellic and Harraway, the St. Clair rink’s chances looked anything but bright, and the score at the seventh head read 9—3 in Green Island's favour. With five heads to go, Smellic had increased his lead to 18—11, but he did not score again, and Harraway took the game by 21 points to 18. . Early in his game against Love. Mi*addon established a handy lend, and with four heads to go he had scored 19 points to his opponents’ 9. Love scored on the next three heads, but his effort was belated. and the game finished with the scores 22 —12 against him. Tiie scoring was fairly even between Fountain and Telford until halfway through the game when the board showed Telford 10, Fountain 8. Telford scored more consistently in the latter stages of the game, and gained a fairly comfortable win by 20 points to 14. Although Anderson drew into the load in the first six heads of his game with Macdonald, the Balraacewen rink monopolised the scoring for the remainder of the game and ran out winners by 19 points to 10.

Despite the discrepancy in the scores, the game between Deare and Stuart proved to be a hard-fought contest, and up to the ninth head, when the scores stood at 9—B in Deare’s favour, it was anyone’s game. A four on the tenth gave Deare a good lead, but Stuart reduced his deficit by two on the nest. From this stage on the St. Kilda rink could do nothing right, and Deare scored on each’ of the succeeding six heads, to bring his score up to 20, the game ending on the seventeenth head. Hutchison gave Seddon a stiff fight all the way, and with half the game completed he had the Caledonian rink down by 11 points to 5. A two, a three and a four to Seddon on the next three heads put a different aspect on the game and gave Caledonian a 1 lead of three points, the tally reading 14 —11 in Seddon’s favour, Hutchison drew level at the sixtenth head, Seddon taking the lead again with a brace of singles. A two to Hutchison on the niuteenth end made them nil square again, but a single on each of the two last heads gave Seddon the game by IS points to 16. Carswell always held the upper hand in his game against Tait. although the latter rallied somewhat after five heads had been played and increased his score to six—one less than his opponent, at the eleventh head. After this Carswell did most of the scoring, the final tally reading 15—10 in his favour.
