GARDEN COMPETITION AWARDS The monthly meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Horticultural Society was attended by Messrs G. A. Skene (chairman), P. Vallango, J. Nelson, H. S. iiungerford, J. B. Downes, J. Miller, W. Blackburn, H. T. Trevenu, H. Bennett, A. G. Kigby, S. D. Macdonald, M. Scott, G. Atlwood, W. Thorn, J. S. M'Gartucy, J. H. Vickers, if. S. Perrett, and J. i’. Gray, Mesdames J. Bodger, W. Jones, and A. G, Kigby, Misses A. MTntyro and A. Cable. Mr J. Fleming tendered his resignation as a member of committee for health reasons, and it was accepted with great regret- . . _

The secretary of the Royal Horticultural Society wrote giving the names of potatoes which should be recognised as distinct varieties for show purposes. Regarding the proposed National Rose Society, the secretary of the Auckland District Council wrote stating that it was not the intention that the society should hold separate national rose shows, but that an endeavour be made to provide for rose classes at shows held by horticultural societies in a similar way to the National Daffodil Society. The statement of the last show presented by the treasurer disclosed very satisfactory receipts and a most successful show, there having been 671 entries. A vote of thanks was passed to the lady members for their successful running of the tea room, and to Miss A, MTntyre for supplying a cake for weight-guessing competition (the cake was won by Mr Hi Bennett). The chairman congratulated Mrs Rigby upon her success at the croquet tournament, and Mr J. Nelson upon the esteem in which he was held in the teaching profession, as was evidenced at the time of his retirement. It was decided to send the committee’s congratulations to Mr F. W. Exler (who resigned from the committee on the eve of his returning ro England) upon the celebration of his golden wedding. The results of the judging of the various garden competitions were to hand. The judging was made under the following headings:—Good arrangement and general effects, 25 points; order and neatness, 15; noteworthy hardy flowers, 10; street fences and hedges, 10; special features. such as rockeries, pergolas, etc. 20. B Competition (autumn judging): Mrs J. B. Downes (22, 14. 7, 8. 10 —67), first; Mrs W. Mackenzie (21, 13, 7. 8, 15—64), second.

Highest aggregate for Iroth competitions: Mrs J. B. Downes (136) first. Mrs W. Mackenzie (134) second. C Competition (large gardens, aggregate for two judgings); Mr A. D. Hudson, Alton avenue (47. 20. 20. 18, 30—150). first; Mr E. A. Pvrke. 68 North road (47. 29, 19, 17, 36—1481. second.
