Bundle, S.M.) drunkenness; Hugh Alexander Kennedy, a statutory first offender, was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. —Another statutory first offender, Charles Edward Maguare, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three mouths. AFTER HOURS. Thomas Henry Smith, who was charged with being found on the licensed premises of the Metropolitan Hotel during the currency of a prohibition order, was fined 20s and costs (10s). REMANDED. Three men and a young woman, whose names were suppressed in the meantime, were charged with supplying a noxious thing with intent to procure abortion. — Detective Sergeant Nuttall said that he had intended proceeding with the prosecution that day, but owing to the absence 'of the Government analyst it was impossible to go on with the case. He affked for a remand till January 25. —The remand was granted. CASTING MATTER. Jamee Mills was fined costs (10s) for casting offensive matter in Princes street. CYCLIST FINED. For cycling at night without a light. David William George Mowat was fined 5s and costs (10s). UNREGISTERED DOG. James Alfred Boreham for failing to register a dog was fined 7s 6d and costs (10s). ' UNLICENSED MOTORIST. Trevor Watts White was fined 10s,. and costs, for being an unlicensed motor driver, A PROHIBITED IMMIGRANT. Henry James Harber pleaded guilty to landing in New Zealand without a permit. The Collector of Customs (Mr Anderson) said that Harber was one of the crew of the steamer Astoria and landed on December 22. He had no permit to land.—The Rev. W. Hamblett said that he knew the young man, who came out from England as an immigrant assisted by the Australian Government. He was engaged for farm work, but received no. money. He took a passage by the Astoria, which he understood would take him home to England, but the vessel was under charter to go to Canada, and he landed in New Zealand. Mr Hamblett added that ho had seen one of the managers of a Home shipping line in Dunedin, who thought it would be possible to get him home in a month’s time. —The magistrate adjourned the case for three weeks on condition that the defendant should report daily to the Collector of Customs in Dunedin, and added that the information would be withdrawn if he could be placed on board a boat in the meantime.

LEVEL CROSSING COLLISION. William Black Anderson was charged with failing to stop before passing over a railway crossing.—Sub-inspector Cameron explained that the defendant bad driven over a level crossing at Edendalo just as a train was approaching, with the’ result that the engine collided with the car, and the defendant was injured. It was a serious thing, the sub-inspector added, for the compulsory stops on level crossing, not to be observed. —The magistrate said that sometimes a compulsory stop was. a ridiculous stop, but agreed that on this occasion the defendant was at fault. —A fine of 40s, and costs (10s), was imposed. UNLICENSED PASSENGER SERVICE. Alfred George Howard was charged with carrying on a motor passenger service between Dunedin and Portobello without a license.—Sub-inspector Cameron explained that this was the first prosecution of its kind to be brought in Dunedin, and the police wished it to serve ns a warning.—The defendant was fined £3, and costs (16s).
