BOWLING

DOMINION TOURNAMENT _ RINKS CHAMPIONSHIP (Peb United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 15. The principal event in the New Zealand Bowling Association’s championship tournament, the Rinks Championship, wag commenced to-day with ten sections, nine j of which contained 10 rinks and the other j 12 rinks. The conditions were perfect i for the games, mainly owing to the entire ' absence of wind and the excellent con- ! dition of the greens. In the morning the greens were a little on the heavy side , owing to overnight showers, but in the ■ afternoon they hardened up considerably and played fast and true. One hundred and two rinks from all part* competed, • and two games will be played each day for four days. In the first game the Dunedin rink skipped by ■ Deare (Gregory, Gardiner, Morrison, and Deare), who won the rinks championship at Auckland last year, was defeated by the Roslyn rink (O’Connell, Clark, Dickson, Armstrong), 27 to 26. Deare’s nnk was not exactly the same as last year in that Morrison replaced J. D. Best who had formerly been lead. Results: — SECTION A. The following is a summary of wins and Josses at the end of two rounds of sectional play, skips only being mentioned; —

NOTES ON THE PLAY (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 15. Chief interest on the St, Albans green centred on the West End rink, skipped by Bremner, who succeded in the classic in 1924 and 1928. He had a very close call against the Sydenham rink skipped by Becconsall, who has played some excpetionally fine games during the past few days. Play generally was of a quiet order on the Christchurch green. An Ashburton rink skipped by Dick, effected a surprise by defeating a strong Dunedin four, included in which was Best and Carswell. The skip, Anderson, is also an accomplished bowler, and it was predicted that they would emerge undefeated in what is not a particularly strong section. All eyes on the Opawa banka were focussed on the Dunedin rink, skipped by Deare. The personnel of the rink is the same as it was last year, with the exception that K. Morrison replaced J. D. Best. Gardiner has been playing very well in the Singles, and paired by Morrison, as a section winner in Pairs, and Gregory and Deare also won their five games in the Pairs. These performances make their chance of again annexing the blue ribbon look particularly rosy.

The outstanding incident on the Barrington Green was the high scoring recorded by Bundy’s Papanui rink against C. Truman, who, despite the fact that he was playing on his own green, could only gather in 9 points to the 41 recorded by his opponent. Great surprise was evinced at the two defeates of the particularly robust Hataitai combination skipped by M'Whannel. This rink has some fine performances in Wellington to its credit and looked as strong as any in the section. Mayer (Wellington) put up a fine score in his opening game, but was beaten by Atkinson in the second round. The Wellington team can be expected to go a long way as they are all in good form. The crack Auckland team skipped by Maxwell Walker had not too much to spare against Goldstone, and they were fully extended by Buck, who managed to win his opening game after a severe struggle. In the Walker and Buck game the Aucklanders led 13 —10 after the seventeenth head. At the twentieth head Buck led 17—16 and then secured two successive singles. Walker got one in the next and on the twenty-fourth secured a three, and a single in the final. It was a fine game all through. Tyrrell, who performed so well on the previous days, scored two wins at Linwood, and his rink looks capable of carrying on. Foster appears to dominate the position in section H. The Hutchison v. Claughton game was remarkable for the number of ties. The scores were even on seven occasions, but the former ultimately won by three.
