OBITUARY

THE HON. VICARY GIBBS LONDON, January 14. The death is announced of the Hon. Vicary Gibbs. The Hon. Vicary Gibbs, 8.A., was born in 1853. He was a partner in Antony Gibbs and Sons, merchants and bankers. From 1892 to 1904 he was Conservative member for St. Albans Division, Herts. MR ARTHUR PELHAM COLLINS THEATRICAL PRODUCER. LONDON, January 14. Mr Arthur Pelham Collins is dead. Mr Collins was managing director of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Ltd., from 1897-1924, He was apprenticed to Henry Emden, scenic artist at Drury Lane Theatre; was subsequently stage manager at Drury Lane, and produced all the dramas and pantomimes there from 1887-96; on - the death of Sir Augustus Harris he obtained a lease of Drury Lane Theatre and formed a limited company; as managing director he produced all the dramas and pantomimes at the National Theatre from 1897-1924. Hhe produced several operas before the late Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. He was .69 years of age. MR R. W. WILLIAMSON AN ENGLISH SOLICITOR. LONDON, January 14. • The death is announced of Mr R. W. Williamson. Mr Williamson was a solicitor by profession, and had been president of the Manchester Law Society and a member of the council of the London Law Society. In 1910 he i travelled in the Solomon Islands, and later joined in an anthropological expedition to New Guinea. His publications dealt with the people of British New Guinea and of Polynesia. He was 75 years of age.

MR WALTER TYRWHITT THE WATER-COLOUR PAINTER. LONDON, January 15. (Received Jan. 15, at 8 p.m.) The death is announced of Mr Walter Tyrwhitt, F.R.S.A., the well-known water-colour painter. After graduating at Oxford Mr Walter Tyrwhitt spent three years in the Queensland bush. Returning to England in 1886 he took to painting in water colours. He was president of the Oxford Art Society, and had 11 pictures exhibited at the Royal Academy. MR HALLIWELL SUTCLIFFE THE WELL-KNOWN NOVELIST. LONDON, January 15. (Received Jan. 15, at 8 p.m.) The death is announced of Mr Halliwell Sutcliffe, the novelist. Mr Halliwell Sutcliffe was born in England in 1870, and was entirely occupied in literary work from 1893. All his serious work concerned the moors and fells of West Yorkshire. MR J. J. CLISBY AUSTRALIAN POLITICIAN. SYDNEY, January 15. (Received Jan. 16, at 1.30 a.m.) The death was announced to-night of Mr J. J. Clisby, the United Australia Party candidate at the recent Federal election who won the East Sydney seat from Mr J. Ward, a Lang Planner, by a narrow majority after a thrilling contest, which evoked interest throughout Australia. Mr Clisby, who was most popular, became seriously ill after the declaration of the poll, which was his last public appearance, and he died of cerebral hemorrhage.

MRS MARGARET LOWRY The death has occurred at Hamilton of Mrs Margaret Lowry, aged 66, a wellknown resident of Hamilton. Mrs Lowry was born at Alexandra, Central Otago, and was married in Dunedin about 45 years ago to Mr Bonnet Charles Lowry. Mr and Mrs Lowry took over the Terraces Hotel, Taupo, in 1900, and nine years later went to Hamilton. Mrs Lowry is survived by her husband and two sons,
