BROADSIDING

i TO-NIGHT’S MEETING \ * • To-night’s meeting at the Speedway Royle should draw the best crowd so far of the season. Patrons to-night will have the opportunity of seeing once more all four Australians pitted against each other and against the best of the local men, while in addition they will be treated to the thrills of team racing in which the two best Australians will lead the best eight riders in Dunedin in a series of desperate races. There is something about this form of contest which makes an especial appeal to the average person, and the teams for to-night have been selected with such care that the issue should remain in doubt right up till the last race. Tommy Tompkins, who will lead one team, will be supported by Lyders, Elms, and Crighton, while the other captain, Packer, will lead out Nesbit, Bysouth, and Homer. After seeing Tommy Tompkins do the four laps on Tuesday night in 85 l-sscc on two occasions, followers of the game will be keen to see him in action again. He is a brilliant rider who knows how to slide into a corner at top speed and hug the inside position even when taking the bends with wide-open throttle. Packer is also a very fast and daring broadsider, while Elms and Bysouth, who were_ last week competing at Christchurch, will be back on the local track. Although the Australians will undoubtedly be the greatest attraction, there are several local riders such as Nesbit, Homer, and Lyders ■who are capable of extending them, and it will be interesting to see whether Nesbit at least can get on even terms with the overseas men. Crighton is also a greatly improved broadsider who, during his short career on the track, has given promise of doing very ■well, and his performances will, therefore, be watched with interest. Special interest will attach to the riding in the Vulcan Oil Cup, which will be competed for on three successive Saturdays. As the winner will be the broadsider who secures the greatest number of points over the three meetings, it will hardly be possible for any but a really good and consistent broadsider to share in the prize money. There will be one other open event, which will include four heats and a final, while variety will be lent by the inclusion of a one mile cycle race on the grass, for which particularly good entries have been received. The popular charges which were introduced at the beginning of the sedson will remain in force, making a night spent at the Speedway Royle one of the cheapest forms of entertainment to be had. Pull particulars as to admission charges, etc., will be found in the advertising. columns of this issue.
