AMATEUR SWIMMING

KIWI CLUB’S CARNIVAL GEODES BREAKS BREASTS T ROKE RECORD NEWALL WINS 440 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP A large attendance, record entries, and keen racing, combined to make the Kiwi Swimming Club’s annual carnival, held in the Municipal Baths last evening, one of the most successful aquatic features staged in Dunedin this season. Interest in the meeting was keener than usual, in view of the fact that it marked the last appearance of the intermediate and junior swimmers chosen to represent Otago at the New Zealand Championships before their departure for Wellington, and the form displayed by at least two members of the team, W. Jarvis and R. Geddos, indicated that in their case at least the selectors have made no mistake in their choice. . , The feature of the carnival was the attempt by the Otago and New Zealand intermediate champion, R. Geddes, on the New Zealand intermediate boys breaststroke record of 77 4-ssec, established by C. Heard in 1923. Swimming with a beautiful sweeping stroke, Geddes covered the first lap in the remarkable time of 20 seconds, the 66 2-3 yards in 45 2-5 seconds, and the full distance in 76 2-5 seconds, thus lowering the record by the decisive margin of 1 2-5 seconds. At the conclusion of his record-breaking swim, Geddes was greeted with a hearty round of cheering. Another record went by the board in the Six-a-side Relay Championship, the Dunedin Club’s team lowering the Otago figures of Imin 52sec by 1 2-ssec. W. JJarvis, the speedy young intermediate, also put up an outstanding performance in the 50 Yards Handicap, in which, oft the scratch mark, conceding 16 seconds to the limit swimmer, he recorded the splendid time of 27 2-5 seconds, covering the first 33 1-3 yards in 16 1-5 seconds—the fastest time registered over a lap in the Municipal Baths for many years. Kerr, who was swimming the backstroke as a workout for the senior championship meeting next month, was keeping up with the others in great style, while Newall was forging ahead to such purpose that lie had a lead of a length with a lap to go. OTAGO CENTRE MEETING A special meeting of the Otago Swimming Centre was held on Wednesday night to complete arrangements for the despatch of the representative teams to the championship meetings at Wellington and Timaru. Mr J. L. M'lndoe presided. It wag stated that J. Barry and Miss G. Rix had been added to the junior team, and that the necessary finance for the fare of these swimmers had been guaranteed. The centre decided to defray the travelling expenses of the five swimmers oiginally selected, billets in Wellington having been offered. Members of the senior team attended the meeting and the chairman explained that on account of the state of the centre’s finances it would be necessary to make a special effort to defray the cost of the trip to Timaru. The polo team would be announced next week when 10' men would be selected. It was decided that the proceeds of the carnival on February 2 should be put towards the cost of sending the senior team to Timaru.
