NOTES ON THE PLAY OTAGO PAIRS DOING WELL (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 14. West (Edgeware) had a very close call in the fifth round when playing Rennie (Christchurch). The scores were level at the finish of the twentieth head. In the last head M'Dougall had three cotmters, when Sewell drove with his last bowl, sending the jack to the ditch and following through. The skips failed to alter the head, and the game went to West by a single. • . _ , Thomas and Needham (West End, Auckland) retired on account of the indisposition of the former. Chambers >, and Martin (Sumner) emerged as section winners by superlative play, and at this stage of the competition they appear almost certain to be amongst the last four who will contest the semifinals, They will meet Nicholas and Claughton to decide the green winner. / Cashmere green was the scene of a few strenuous game's. Howarth (Canterbury) won through his section in good style with four wins to his credit. Each was secured by the narrow margin of one point, with the exception of the fourth game, when the margin amounted to two. He was well down in his game with Holmes (Rakaia),, but his lead, Ives, played some splendid dra\y shots to win on the last head. In the match between Shennan and Burt (Greymouth) and Pollock and Middlebrook (Newtown) the scores were B—7 on the ninth head, the Wellington pair getting a single on the next head. Burt secured a 4 on the eleventh, making 1 the score 11 —9. In the last head Shennan drew 2, but Pollock shifted the kitty and lay 3. Burt drew second shot, and with his last trailed the jack to finish 2 up on the head. , _ W. Dobbs, the substitute for Dr J. D. Marks, played an exceptionally fine game against G. Deare, the skip of last year’s champion rink. He was half a_ dozen down at one stage, but his consistency carried him through. . Lomas and Edwards met twice on the Linwood green, the former haying to beat Edwards the first time to tie with the Otago skip with four wins each. Lomas won the play-off. Morrison and Gardiner (Dunedin) car. ried all before them in their section, both playing first class bowls. Their form augers well for the Dunedin combination 3 chance of annexing the event. Ferguson (Balmacewen) emerged as a section winner and met another Dunedin pair to find the green winner, but was not equal to the occasion, Dowland and Buist (St. Hilda) carrying too many guns for them. Bremner and Hardley performed well in their section, but need to be at their best against Bailey _ and Worsley (Hornby), who are playing_good bowls. A well-performed pair in Stone and Mayer were eliminated in their section by IHgby and Hutchison (Dunedin). The Wellington players had given fine exhibitions in some of the earlier rounds, and they put up a good showing against their formidable opponents for the honour of green winner. The fact that three green winners were found can be considered eminently satisfactory, and is an indication of the efficiency with which the tournament is being conducted. Dunedin appears to hold a strong hand, and it is difficult to nominate any pair capable of defeating the best of the Otago entrants.
