The union of Palmerston with the Waikouaiti parish has necessitated some assistance to the vicar, and the Rev. Melville Newton, of Hamilton, has been appointed curate to the parish. A welcome social was tendered to Mr and Mrs Newton last evening, a large number of parishioners and others being present. The vicar (the Rev. C. W. Foreman) introduced the newcomers. The ministers of other two churches—Mr Potts (Presbyterian) and Mr Thomas (Methodist) were also present. At the conclusion of the formal welcome a supper, provided by the ladies of the parish, was enjoyed, after which games and dancing were indulged in. Mr V. M’Clymont presided at the piano, and a recitation was given by Miss Thomas.
