PURAKANUI NOTES
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR ACTIVITIES. Although the weather was not ag good as hoped for bathing and boating were as usual the chief amusements at Pnrakanui'during the holidays. The first official outing of the holidays was the sports gathering which ’was held on Boxing Day, on the fiat ground belonging to the Alaoris across the Inlet. The sun was shining with a slight breeze blowing and many made it the occasion for a picnic. Under_ the capable supervision of Messrs Davidson, Jackson, Payton, and others who helped to make the function a success, the numerous events passed off without delay. The results were as follow: —Night Alarm Race: D. Shugar 1, R. Arthur 2. Local Boys’ Race: A. Chapman 1, GHenry 2. Chris. Gardner Alemonal, iOO yards, open (men): Arthur 1, Davis 2. Wheel-barrow Race: A. Henry and A. Chapman 1, J. Chapman and H. AI Lachlan 2. Married Men’s Race: Air Davis 1, Air Shepherd 2. Alarried Ladies Race: Airs Lynburn 1, Mrs Woodhouse 2. Men’s Sack Race: Bertinshaw 1, Pyne 2. Local Residents’ Race: Driver 1, Foot o 2. Potato Race: D, Henry 1, J. Chapman 2. Ladies’ Sack Race: Miss B. Juriss 1, Aliss Pastier 2. Three-Legged Race: B. Juriss and J. Aitken 1, M. M'Lachlan and R. Larkins 2. _ The Tug of War was won by Purakanm. At the conclusion of the programme the president of the Amenities Society (Mr J. Hamel) welcomed the visitors and residents and thanked everyone who had helped to make the occasion a success. A number of kites, presented by Mr Aloodie, of Dunedin, was then distributed among the boys, a competition being held later in the week. New Year’s Eve was marred early in the evening by a slight fall of rain, but improved later. At 9 o’clock, full tide, Mr Paterson, in his launch, towed the various competitors for the Decorated Boat Parade down to the store, where a large crowd had gathered to hear the judges decision. The calm water made a beautiful setting for the coloured lanterns and other decorations and the judge’s task appeared to be a hard one. The results were as follow: —Misses K. and N. Corke 1. and M. Fastier and Gibson 2 (equal). Every crib was brightly illuminated with coloured lanterns and even before 12 o’clock many bonfires were blazing fiercely. The New Year was ushered in with appropriate ceremonies. u First-footers y> t then set out on their time-honoured mission The regatta was commenced at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 2. The day was threatening, with scattered showers and a cold breeze. The officials were Messrs Patterson (starter and handicapper), Tyrie (judge), and Simpson.
