SEVERE STORM IN BRISBANE. CLIMAX TO EXCESSIVE HEAT. BRISBANE, January 13. The whole of Queensland has been in the grip of a heat wave for the past week. The temperature at Charleville yesterday reached 120 deg. Emerald registered llOdeg., and many other places over the century. An old man and a boy died as the result of the excessive heat. There was a climax when one of the most severe storms for many years burst over the city. Vivid lightning accompanied the fierce wind and torrential rain. Within a few minutes the streets were like rivers. The transport services were disorganised, and the electric light failed in several suburbs. . DISCOVERY BY DETECTIVES. ARSENAL IN DISUSED GARAGE. SYDNEY, January 13. (Received Jan. 13, at 10 p.m.) Detectives who were searching among junk in a disused garage at Catley unearthed an arsenal of 600 Winchester bullets, 500 rounds of cartridges, a large tin of gunpowder, two rifles, a shotgun and paraphernalia for the manufacture of bullets. The occupier of the house, who is drawing the dole, was arrested. , RETURNED SOLDIERS. PREFERENCE IN EMPLOYMENT. CANBERRA, January 13. The Minister of Horae Affairs (Mr R. A. Parkhill) stated that the new Government would give full preference in employment to returned soldiers. The first step taken by the Government in its anti-Communist policy will be to reissue the proclamation prohibiting the import of all literature advocating overthrow by force of any constitutional Government. THE PINE CREEK RIOTS. SIX MEN SENTENCED. CANBERRA, January 13. (Received Jan. 13, at 11.55 p.m.) Six men who were concerned in the Pine Creek riots were sentenced to two months’ imprisonment. The Federal Ministry is obtaining a report on the growth of Communism in the northern territory.
