BROADSIDING

SATURDAY’S MEETING Following the meeting which was held at the Speedway Royle on Tuesday night, followers of the sport of broadsiding will have another chance this week of seeing this thrilling sport. A well-varied programme has been arranged, and patrons should see a good night’s racing. _ There will be two open events in which the four Australian riders who have been attached to the track this year will be competing against the local men, who will be riding off handicaps which will give them a chance of sharing in the prize money. After seeing Tommy Tompkins do the four laps on Tuesday night in 85 l-ssec on two occasions, followers of the game will be keen to see him in action again. He is a brilliant rider who knows how to slide into a corner at top speed and hug the inside position even when taking the bends with wide-open throttle. Packer is also a very fast and daring broadsider, while Elms and Bysouth, who were last week competing at Christchurch, will be back on the local track. One of the open events will be the Vulcan Oil Cup, which will be competed for on three successive Saturdays, the winner being the rider who secures the most points over the three meetings. This is bound to result in keen competition, and some particularly close finishes are expected. The public will be pleased to learn that teams’ racing is to be revived again. On Saturday night Tompkins and Packer will lead two teams of four men each in an interteam contest of four heats, Tompkins’s men will be Lyders, Elms, and Crightoif, while Packer will be supported by Ncsbit, Bysouth, and Homer. It will be agreed by those who have followed the racing this year that the teams are very well matched, with the result that the issue should be in doubt right up till the last heat. In addition to the broadsiding events two heats and a final of a one mile cycle race will be run on the grass in the centre, rounding off a programme of 16 events, Vhich should make up a remarkably good evening’s entertainment. The following handicaps have been declared by the Otago Athletic and Cycling Club’s handicapper (Mr W. MacPherson) for the cycle race:—First heat: A. N. Ralston scr. T. Brosnan 20yds, G. Forward, G. 0. Johnstone 100, T. Dixon, N. Mackey 110, L. Johnstone, A. Douglas 130. Second heat: C. W. Preen 30yds, A. J. Brown 60, A. C. E. Wills, B. Thomas 100, W. Wilson 130, A. Astore, S.
