OIL IN AUSTRALIA
IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENT FIRST CONTRACT FOR SALE. CANBERRA, January 8. (Received Jan. 8, at 9 p.m.) The Prime Minister’s Department announces that Austrlia is now producing oil on a commercial basis. The first contract for the sale of shale oil pro-, duced at Newnes, near Lithgow, has been completed, the Australian Gaslight Company having purchased 60,000 gallons. This development is regarded as of vital importance and marks the beginning of a major industry which should soon come into active competition with powerful overseas oil interests.
