BROADSIDING

TO-NIGHT’S MEETING The programme which will be offered to patrons at the Speedway Royle to-night is one which should appeal to all followers of the sport. The principal event will be the Big Three Points Race, -which will see the two Australian, Tompkins and Packer, who, in their two appearances here, have shown themselves to be daring broadsiders, matched against the English rider, Wally Hull, who has this season been attached to Monica Park, Christchurch. The Englishmen have a long list of successes on the local track, the conditions apparently suiting them, and it will, therefore, be interesting to see whether the Australians can this time lower England’s .colours. Those who saw Tompkins at his first meeting here, when he turned in some remarkably fast times, will admit that with a rider of such calibre on the track there is always a possibility of the record going by the board. Packer also has a wonderful record behind him, making it appear that he haa not yet been seen at his best. The Intertrack Contest, in which “ Shorty ” Wick s and Eric Pyke, of Monica Park, will compete against Peter Lyders and Jim Nesbit, of the Speedway Royle, will be the other big event. Wicks was seen here in action last Saturday, when he showed himself to be a particularly daring broadsider. Nesbit also appears now to be reaching the top of his form, giving a thrilling display at the same meeting in the final of the St. Clair Handicap, when he snatched the victory on the last bend with a brilliant piece of riding. All the visiting riders and the best of the local men will be seen again in the Mosgiel and Royal Handicaps, in which, with a good system of handicapping, some close finishes should be seen. With four heats and a final in each the public will be provided with entertainment which should appeal to all. Full particulars as to the prices of admission, etc., are contained in the advertising columns of this issue.
