AN EXAGGERATED RUMOUR PORTION OF CARGO JETTISONED. (Peb United Peess Association.) WELLINGTON, January 8. A report to the effect that the refrigerating machinery of the Government motor ship Maui Pomare had broken down and that her cargo of fruit had been jettisoned, was current in Wellington this afternoon. The agents for the vessel, Messrs Gardiner, Bennie, and Halliburton, stated this evening that the vessel, which was to have proceeded to Lyttelton direct, has been diverted to Wellington, and is due here to-morrow morning. They understood that portion of her cargo of about 9000 cases of fruit, principally bananas,, from Apia and Niue Island, had become overheated, and a small quantity had been jettisoned. They also stated that there had been no trouble with the refrigerating machinery. The Wellington portion of the fruit cargo will be discharged at Wellington on the vessel’s arrival. It will probably depend on the condition of the remainder of the fruit as to whether it will be put out here, or taken on to Lyttelton in the vessel.
