CENTRAL OTAGO

ALEXANDRA NOTES (Fkoit Oub Own Correspondent.) ALEXANDRA, January 8. MOTORISTS’ CAMP. The motorists’ camp at Alexandra has proved more popular than ever this year, and on one night at least 12 camping parties were there. An average of about eight has been in camp every night during the holidays. One camper, who had been on a camping holiday, and who had at various times visited many camping grounds, said the one at Alexandra ground was as good a spot as he had yet camped in. The spot is nicely sheltered with ample room and a plentiful water supply, and •. is in very close proximity to the business area of the town. METEOROLOGICAL. The following are the observations taken at the local meteorological station at 9 a.m. each day for the past week:—

UNEMPLOYMENT. The unemployment question is still acute here, notwithstanding that the fruit season is now practically in full swing. This class of work, however, absorbs only young men and women, and is not really suitable for the married men who are out of permanent employment. The returned soldiers are being employed almost full time with the funds subsidised by the Vincent County Council for the Returned Soldiers’ Fund, which has been used in making improvements to the main highdays, especially the Alexandra-Roxburgh road.' ANGLING. With the advent of better weather the prospects for anglers have been much brighter, and with the occasional rain showers fishing has been very good, and some record bags have been obtained. The Manorburn dam still is, of course, the most favoured spot locally, and fish up to slb have been caught within the past few days. PERSONAL. ■ Mr R. B. Tennent, fields superintendent of the Department of Agriculture, wag in Alexandra this week on business. Mr J. Sullivan, inspector of post offices for the North Island, who has been on a holiday in Alexandra, returned north this week, Mr A. F. Stewart, manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, commenced his annual leave this week. He is being relived by Mr Macdonald, of the Dunedin branch.
