BROADSIDING

TO-MORROW’S MEETING The big event at the Speedway Roy! e to-morrow night will be the meeting of Wally Hull, of England, who has this season been attached to Monica Park, Christchurch, with the two Australian riders, Tommy Tompkins and Laurie Packer. Hull’s performances at Monica Park last Saturday night earned for him the reputation in the press of a ” sterling rider,” and his appearance here will be looked forward to with interest. It will be generally admitted that if he can produce form approaching that of his countryman and track companion, Sid Jackson, who rode so splendidly here last Saturday, defeating Bysouth and Elms in all three races of the international match, he will be a hard man to beat. The Englishmen who have been seen in Dunedin so far have all been first-class broadsiders, and from every international contest in which they have been engaged against the Australians on the local track they have emerged victorious. It will, therefore, be interesting to see how Hull will shape when pitted against Tompkins and Packer, who are admitted to be dirt track racers of more than the average calibre. The Intertrack Contest, in which "Shorty” Wicks and Eric Pyke, of Monica Park, will compete against Peter Lyders and Jim Nesbit, of the Speedway Royle, will be the other big event. Wicks was seen here in action last Saturday, when he showed himself to be a particularly daring broadsider. Nesbit also appears <flow to be reaching the top of his form, giving a thrilling display at the same meeting in the final of the St. Clair Handicap, when he snatched the victory on the last bend with a brilliant piece of riding. All the visiting riders and the best of the local men will be seen again in the Mosgiel and Royal Handicaps, in which, with a good system of handicapping, some close finishes should be seen. With four heats and a final in each the public will be provided with entertainment which should appeal to all followers of the sport.
