BALCLUTHA NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, January 7. The registrations for births, deaths, and marriages at Balelutha for the year ended December 31, 1931, show a big variation compared with previous years. Births in 1931 were 83, compared with 100 in 1930 and 104 in 1929; deaths in 1931 were 52, as compared with 50 in 1930 and 10 in 1929; marriages in 1931 were 24, as compared with 29 in 1930 and 28 in 1929. The following were the registrations for the month of December, the corresponding month of the previous year being given in parentheses: —Births 9 (8), deaths 2 (3), marriages 2 (1). For the quarter ended December, 1931, the statistics were: Births 20, (1930, 20), deaths 13 (1930, 8), marriages 5 (1930, 7). The South Otago Freezing Works opened on Wednesday with 36 butchers —a full complement. About 2000 lambs were put through. With the large percentage of lambs which was recorded during the season, it is anticipated that a record year will be established at the works. A movement is afoot to establish evening sports, under the auspices of the Clutha Caledonian Society. Three, if not four, new dwelling houses are to be erected in Balelutha in the near future, which will be a big “fillip” to the local building trade.
