Vice-Reoal. The Governor-Genera] (Lord Bledisloe) held an investiture at Government House, Wellington, last night (says a Press Association telegram), at which his Excellency presented to Mr R. A. Anderson, of Invercargill, and Mr 6. A. Troup, _ formerly Mayor of Wellington, the insignia of Companions of the Order of bt, Michael and St. George. His Excellency also presented to Mr William Waddej, lately superintendent of the State Ad-vances-Department, Wellington, the insignia of a Commander of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire. The investiture was followed by a reception at which a large number of guests were received by their Excellencies.

At the Wellington Competitions Society’s annual festival yesterday, Mr James Harper, of Gore, secured first.place in the oration contest, and had the second aggregate for impromptu debate and oration. Miss Dorothy Clark (Dunedin) was placed second in the ladies’ recital with musical accompaniment. The champion of champions in the elocution section was Mrs Dorothy Dunn, of Dunedin, who secured 204 points, the second placed competitor gaining 248. Members of the staff of the Government Insurance Department met on Monday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr T. Casserley, chief clerk, on his transfer to Wellington. In presenting him on behalf of the staff with a silver cigarette case, a set of military hairbrushes, and a shav-' ing outfit, Mr T. P. Laurenson, district manager, referred to the recipient’s many good qualities and to the cordial relations which had existed in the office, and wished him every success in his new Sphere of labour. These remarks were endorsed by various .other members of the staff, and Mr Casserley suitably replied. The vacancy on the London secretariat of the British and Foreign Bible Society, which occufretl through the' resignation of. the Rev. John Ritson, has been filled (says a Press Association telegram from Wellington) by the appointment of the Rev. John Robinson Temple, a member of the English Wesleyan Church. He had 11 years’ missionary work in South China, and was for two years a chaplain in France. He will be a colleague of the Rev. A. H. Wilkinson, who now takes charge of the department which includes New Zealand.
