AN UNEXPLAINED EXPERIENCE

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Some three or four weeks ago an iceberg was supposed to have; been seen off the coast in the vicinity of the Nuggets, and I have been wondering whether there was any connection between that and a rather terrifying experience which some of the residents in close proximity to Brighton, as well as on the Taieri Plain, went through about midnight of the night (Saturday) previous to the alleged sighting of the iceberg. . A loud rumbling roar was heard—in all, five times. The first was very loud and so long continued that those who heard it made preparations to rush out of doors. The intensity seemed to decrease as the night wore on. The last noise, occurring about 4 o’clock, had more the sound of a dull explosion. Do you think that the rolling over of an iceberg or the breaking of portions off an iceberg would produce a noise like that? . I have been waiting to see if anyone else would report this occurrence. Hence my delay in writing about it. —I am, etc., Interested.
