(From (Job Own Correspondent.) < BALCLUTHA, July 16. GOLF. The following members of the local Ladies’ Golf Club will play a match against a similar number from tlie Milton Club at Milton-on Saturday:— Mesdames Poynter, Uren, Ramsay, Misses Malcolm, F. Fleming, and Grant. ROAD v. RAIL. ■ The secretary of the Clutha branch of the Farmers’ Union has received correspondence from the Prime Minister (Mr G W. Forbes) the Minister of Transport (Mr W. A. Veiteh), and Mr F. Waite, M.P., on the subject of the competition ■between motor lorry and railways on certain main routes. The. Ministerial reply ’is to the effect that the matter is receiving consideration. Mr Waite states that personally he is in favour of creating favourable conditions for lorries feeding the railways. The union, however, wished for discrimination to be made against those vehicles that were in. direct competition with the railways, these being very numerous on the road between Dunedin and southern centres. ELECTORAL ROLL.
The main electoral roll for Clutha contains 9843 names, an increase of 1118 names as compared with the main roll at the 1028 election. OBITUARY.
Mr Walter Allan, who died on Tuesday at the age of , 70, was perhaps the bestknown road contractor in the Tuapeka Mouth district, although latterly his activities had. largely been confined to the Bruce County. He was a remarkable man in his own line of business, and possessed of the true hardiness of fibre disinguishing the pioneer. He had been road contracting fpr a period of oyer 40 years. Mr Allan is survived by his widow and a grown-up family. The funeral took place at Tuapeka Mouth today. ’■ ■ , .... ... .
