SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK
SURVEY WORK DELAYED BAD WEATHER ENCOUNTERED. (Peb United Pbess Association.) BLENHEIM, June 15. On Saturday the Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department (Mr F. W. Furkert), accompanied by Mr L. May (district engineer), visited Clifford Bay, near Cape Campbell, where a marine survey is being carrie.d out to determine the suitability of the locality for the main terminal of the South Island Main Trunk railway. Mr Furkert returned to Wellington without making any comment. It is understood that the survey is still only half completed owing to bad weather being encountered and owing to the fact that the surveyors have at their disposal only a small rowing boat, but the work is to be pushed on with the utmost despatch, presumably so that the data obtained may he used for the guidance of the Railway Board as a supplement to the special report on the subject which is known to be in existence.
