A protest is being raised in Paris against the system of naming streets after people. It has been fairly common recently for a thoroughfare to have its name changed in order to do honour to a more or less 'celebrated person. But this is a cause of great confusion, and it is pointed out that it really serves no good purpose. The majority of the people who are thus commemorated are unknown to the average Parisian of the present day. It is suggested that the system of linking thoroughfares with their topographical peculiarities, historical events, or trades or professions should be revived. One advantage would he that a road might be expected to retain its name for many years. At present a street may bear a certain name until the glamour of its baptism becomes dimmed by time and then be rechristened.
