PALMERSTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) / PALMERSTON, June 13.

Palmerston has been well off for entertainments during* the week. These included card tournaments, a fancy dress dance, a large reunion of ex-service men, a free screening by a well-known trading and manufacturing concern of a growing New Zealand industry, the unveiling of the Sir John M'Kenzie Memorial, football, and the opening of the new bowling pavilion.^ BOWLING PAVILION.

There was a large attendance at the bowling green on Saturday afternoon. Mr J. J. Haggle, president, welcomed the visitors, and said he was proud to he there to open such a handsome pavilion. When the , ladies were allowed to join the club four years *>go there was only the old' open pavilion, and the ladies at once commenced to gather money by card parties, garden parties, and other means to make improvements. When they had collected £l2O it was found that there was a £IOO mortgage on the property, and some of the ground was leased. They paid off the mortgage, and made a fresh start. This year the leased ground was bought, and they had £250 in hand, and, after a club member had lent.' £3OO on easy terms, tenders were called for a pavilion. The building and other improvements would cost a little over £SOO. ■ Other speakers were the Mayor (Mr W. H. Hopkins), Mr J. A. Macpherson, M.P., Mr Mitchell (president of the North Otago Centre), and representatives of the Waikouaiti, Hampden, Meadowbank, and Phoenix Clubs, Mr W. A. Sawyer (president of the Lawn Tennis Club), and Messrs Grenfell and Cowan. Mrs David Ross invited all present to afternoon tea. , .... The pavilion is a handsome building, 44 feet long and 18 feet wide, with a sevenfeet veranda. There is a ladies’ room, a kitchen, a social room, and a mens room. There are lockers in both -he ladies’ and men’s rooms. The outside walls are Fibrolite asbestos sheets, covered with rough cast. The interior is lit with petrol light, and the> inside lining is very handsome. . It is the intention of the ladies to hold card parties in the social room, which is heated by a stove.

EX-SERVICE MEN’S REUNION. The reunion of ex-service men held in the Town Hall on Friday night was a great success. This is the first occasion since war days when so many service men have been gathered together, and indicates that lack of organisation is the only reason for it being the first big gathering after 12 years. Nearly 90 men were present, and a most enjoyable evening resulted.

The following toasts were honoured: — "Absent Comrades” (Mr George Ross), "N.Z.R.S.A." (Mr E. H. Clarke, M.L.C., and R.S.A. officials), “Our Guests” (Mr J. Turina, Mr E. H. Clark, M.L.C., and Mr W. Hopkins), “ South African Veterans” (Mr J. Preston,.Mr W. Hayward). Items consisted of a violin solo by Mr W. Wilson; euphonium solo, Mr J. Lester; vocal items —Messrs G. Sloan, A. Banks, G. M'lntosh, A. Wilson, and W. Rov; recitation, Mr M'lvor. Several new members were enrolled, and others announced their intention of joining at a future dqte.
