MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held yesterday, and was attended by Crs Macandrew (chairman), Robertson, Miller, Brunton, Irvine, Allan, Stewart, Cross, and Hellyer. Advice was received from the Otago Hospital Board that the council’s share of hospital expenditure for the ensuing year was £928 le 8d. —The clerk stated that this amount was about £3OO less than in the previous year. It was decided to make a donation or £lO towards the funds of the Bt. John Ambulance Association. ■_ , Accounts amounting to £1423 19s act were passed for payment. It was decided to decline the requests of oil companies that' the council should bear the cost of the removal of bowsers. Their removal, it was claimed, had been made necessary through work which the council had carried out at Macandrew Bay. Three residents of Mount Charles, Portobello, wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road from Mrs Geary’s to Mr Allen’s gate. —It was reported that the work was already in hand. Mr W. Wilman, Broad Bay, wrote drawing attention to the state of Camp road from Pukehiki to the castle.—The matter was left in the hands of Cr Robertson and the engineer. Mr F. W, Furkert (Engineer-in-Chief, Public Works Department) wrote stating that the council’s request for £IOOO to complete the restoration of the metal on the Portobello-Harrington Point road had been referred to the Minister of Public Works, who had directed that the request be declined.—Received. Mr Arthur Picard, Waverley, also wrote asking for attention to the roads round his property.—The matter was referred to the local members and the engineer. .

The commissioner of transport-* wrote asking for the present position regarding the classification of roads in the county. —The engineer’s classification was approved. - Mr John Ash, secretary of the Dunedin Amenities and Town Planning Society wrote stating that his society had received a letter from the Christchurch branch of the Town Planning Institute stilting that it had been decided to circularise county councils in the Canterbury district urging the abolition of advertisement hoardings that injuriously affected the preservation of rural amenities. The Dunedin Society was entirely in sympathy with the Christchurch branch in this matter and would ask the council favo’urably to consider the request.—The letter was received, the council having previously given a favourable , reply to a similar' letter from another society. It was decided to sell metal from the crusher at the council’s quarries at a price to be finally settled by the engineer. The council agreed to find half the cost, amounting to £270, of providing extra width on the beach road from the Portobello wharf to the Post Office. —It was .reported that between £4O and £SO had already been promised locally. The following rates were fixed for the ensuing year;—General rate, Id in the Heads riding and lid in the remainder; hospital rate, Id; lighting rates—Portobello Id, North-East Harbour Id, Helensburgh township, special works rate |d.— The clerk reported that this would result in a total reduction in rates of £llß4. The reduction in the general rate in the Otago Heads, North-East Harbour, Broad Bay, .and Portobello Ridings was Jd, .and in the others Id. The lighting rates were the same as in the previous year. A rebate of 5 per cent, would be allowed on all accounts paid before September 17. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer reported as follows: — Otago Heads Riding—The trimming of the formation dn Karetai road has been completed. The metalling of the Portobello to Harrington - Point road has been completed as far as the present grant will go. G • Portobello Riding.—The patching of the Portobello to Cape Saunders road has been completed. Patching of the Papaniii Inlet road is in hand. Broad Bay Riding—The regrading and widening of Harbour terrace, Broad Bay, has been continued, the sharp turn at the intersection of Roebuck rise and Harbour terrace is being eased. The newly-laid 30in culvert placed across the Beach road near Clearwater’s store has been extended across the School road. North-East Harbour Riding.—Wafer tables have been cleaned on . Marine parade, Marion street, and District road, and on the Beach road. The widening of Larnach road is proceeding. Grading of the main highway him been done fort'tomahawk Riding.—The widening,of the Tomahawk main highway is proceeding between the bridge and the cemetery. Loose metal on the highway has been graded up twice during the period, Highcliff Riding.—The contractor has completed the section of metalling allowed for in his contract on the Highcliff road.
