SALE OF PAINTINGS
Messrs Park, Reynolds, Ltd., have on view until the time of sale to-morrow a collection of 113 oil and water colours, etchings, and reproductions which will amply repay anyone for the time necessary to inspect it. The whole collection IS, good, and the works have been apparently, carefully selected, for there is somethin* for every kind of purchaser. Ao. “Evening in Ayrshire,’’ by Blythe.hletcher, is a beautiful work, with admirable perspective and atmosphere. It is reminiscent of the older style of painters, and, though the artist has several other work* all worth a study, this one appeals to the onlooker as something absolutely natural and descriptive of the country. No. 60, “At/the Otira,” by E. Baird Friberg is a Teal picture of the New Zealand snow-capped mountains. It_ la good in composition and the colour is strong and clean. There has been no washing out in this picture, which gives one the impression that the artist was impressed by the grandeur of the scene and responded bv painting it as it actually was. No. Si), a large oil, “The Water Garner,” by Lindauer, is a strong piece of work, bringing out the happy native disposition in the smile which greets the visitor. No. 52, “ In Pastures Green,” by V. E. Whiteman, is a picture which will appeal to all lovers of horses. The rich chestnut thoroughbred mare and chestnut foal contrast strikingly with the green grass and woods. No. 34., “Pond at Swanage,” by C. Hay Campbell, is one which catches the eye at once, with its stone cottages, water, and vivid sunlight and shadow.' No. 25 “The Favourite Model,” by J. Lawson Balfour, is a small picture, but beautifully coloured, and the artist, by his contrasts, has gained the effect he strove for. The green cap_, contrasting with the rich auburn hair, is very striking. No. IS, " Somerset Farm,” by A. C. Gould, is a strong modern painting, and the sunlight through the trees is particularly well done. No. 39, “Reflections, by C. Hay Campbell, is a splendidly executed piece, and is a pleasure to look at. No. 15, “Scottish Covenantors, by G. Catlermole. is unlike his usual knights in armour, but depicts the Covenanters with the stern determined faces and the zeal which inspired them in their troublous times. The original etchings, gquatint etchings, and process reproductions are good—some of them especially so—mid help to make up a valuable and interesting catalogue.
