Harding, Petone, before leaving for Dunedin. * * * The engagement is announced of Elizabeth Norma, fourth daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Smith, of Port Chalmers. « :{. . # A lecture which should prove of interest to members of the Gardening Circle of the Otago Women's Club will be given this afternoon at the club rooms by Mr E. A. Hamel, his subject being "Chrysanthemums and Pot Plants." * # * The Haeromai Club held its lirst annual dance at the Tudor Hall on Saturday night, the reserved table being artistically decorated in the club's colours —orange and black. Among those present were: Mrs H. Gourley, Misses N. Haraer, M. Howard, B. Glendinning, R. Robinson, K. Curran, D. Austen, A. Gourley. P. Garland, and C. Lee. Messrs Passmore, Sutherland, Wallis, Ham, Baird, Dawstm, Laing, Hannay. Guthrie, and Gourley. * * * The monthly meeting of the Papatowai Women's Institute was held in the school on June 2, at 7.30 p.m., when there was an enthusiastic gathering. In the absence of the president, Mrs W. Tubman, who was in Dunedin attending the annual conference, Mrs T. V. Latta presided. The roll call took the form of " Earliest Recollections," and some very interesting and amusing revelations were made. Mi6S E. Logan, then gave a demonstration on "The Making of Fruit Dishes from Old Records." There followed a social halfhour, which was very enjoyable. Mrs Adams and Miss A. Croft were hostesses for the evening. V * * Messrs J. Hazlett and A. Speight were joint hosts at a dinner party given at Wain's Hotel* on Saturday evening, followed by a cabaret dance at Tudor Hall. Stewart. #■'.#.# Mrs Harman Reeves was hostess at a "coming out" dance given at her residence, Park street, on Friday evening, in honour of her daughter, Mary, and her niece, Miss Norah Newton, of Christchurch. In the ballroom, which was ablaze with seasonal blooms, over which lights shed a soft glow, the 112 guests were received by the hostess, who wis attired in a handsome gown of black lace, Mrs Newton wearing a becoming gown of black georgette. The two young debutantes were charming" figures in cream, Miss Mary Reeves wearing a dainty gown of lace cleverly designed with georgette, which was enhanced by a bouquet in varying tones of pink, which she carried, and Miss Norah Newton, a gown of georgette, accentuated by an exquisite bouquet of cream, also of varying tones. Miss Betty Reeves wore black georgette, offset by a belt of emerald, the same brilliant shade being repeated in shoes, necklace, and earrings.
