TOUR OF HASTINGS A FAR-REACHING DECISION (Per United Press Association.) HASTINGS, April 1. A decision 'that will have far-reaching effect on the future of the town of Hastings was made last evening at a meeting of 60 property owners and residents (who were addressed by Mr Mawson, director of town planning), when a resolution was unanimously carried that Heretaunga street be widened by 10 feet. REMAINS IDENTIFIED. NAPIER, April 1. The unidentified remains discovered on February 9 have now been identified as those of’ Sybil Florence Wood, a music teacher. At the last meeting of the Dunedin and Suburban Operative Butchers’ Union it was decided to vote the sum of £lO 10s to the Earthquake Fund. RELIEF FUNDS IN AUSTRALIA. (United Press Association.) (By Electric —Copyright.) SYDNEY, April 1. (Received April 1, at 11.30 p.m.) The amount already raised in Australia on behalf of the New Zealand Earthquake Fund approximates £80613, with contributions still arriving from various quarters. Mr L. J. Schmitt, the New Zealand Government Commissioner, who. is keeping in touch with the fund here, regards this response as most satisfactory in view of the difficult times in the Commonwealth. ‘ He points out that the Lord Mayor’s Fund in Sydney is at present in the neighbourhood of £2300, of which £IOOO has already been lodged with the Bank of New Zealand. Other contributions include £650 from the Victorian branch of the New Zealand Association, £250 from the Manchester Unity Oddfellows’ Lodge, £IOO by the Australian Workers’ Union. £4600 from the Melbourne Argus Fuud, and £540 from the Brisbane Courier Fund. Society folk in Sydney are sitll raising substantial amounts by dances, one of which will be held on board the liner Nieuw Holland on April 17. A well-known firm of bedding manufacturers is shipping 20 bedsteads and mattresses by the Marama to-morrow for the earthquake sufferers. Mr Schmitt is of the opinion that the Australian collections and contributions will eventually reach £IO,OOO.
