QUEENSTOWN NOTES

(From Ouk Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, March 31. THE WEATHER. Following on days of glorious March weather, rain fell yesterday for three or four hours. The sky cleared again towards evening, and to-day has been quite fine again, though a trifle colder. If it keeps like this for Easter all will be well. A full programme of outings and entertainments in the evenings has Been arranged for the holidays, so visitors to Queenstown over the Easter week-end will be well catered for. The Railways Department ran an excursion up the lake last Easter Sunday, and it was very largely patronised. The outing is to be repeated next Sunday. The readings taken at the local meteorological station for the seven days ended March 29 are:—■

A two-rink match between representatives of the Wakatipu Bowling Club and the Wakatipu Golf Club was played during the week on the local green. The bowlers were skipped by L. J. Lynch and V. Scandrett and the golfers by Cooke and Nelson. The first game ended 18 all, the second 29 —19 in favour of the bowling club. The doubles competition for Mr Thomas Rutherford’s trophy has now reached the finals. In the fourth round Scandrett 30 defeated Perks 17, Cooke 39 defeated Nel son 9. In the semi-final Cooke and Warren 23 defeated Nelson and Davidson 13. Scandrett and Bailey a bye. WAKATIPU GOLF CLUB. The annual meeting of the Wakatipu Golf Club took place in the-County Chambers on Thursday evening, when the attendance was much smaller than usual. Mr A. H. Cooke (president) occupied the chair. The report and balance sheet disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs. The receipts for the 12 months amounted to £259, which included the sum of £135 paid by the Kawarau Gold Mining Company for arrears of rent of the golfhouse. Subscriptions totalled £sl 6s 6d. The main item of expenditure was £44 17s 9d for labour. The credit at the beginning of the year was £59 7s lOd, and it closed with a balance of £176 13s lid The committee expressed regret at the loss during the year of several enthusiastic members, one of these by death, namely, Mrs J. Dagg, jun., and the others —Mr and Mrs Robert Gilkison, Mr and Mrs W. Harper, and Mr and Mrs Fred Stoop—by removal from Queenstown. Congratulations were offered the winners of the club championships, Mrs G. V. Wilkinson and Mr A. H. Cooke. The election of office-bearers resulted; — President, Mr A. H. Cooke; vice-presi-dents —Dr Anderson, Messrs A. F. Griffin, D. F. Macdonald, W. Elliot, D. Jardine, and Mesdames L. Curtis and L. Mann; secretary, Mr E. N. Mosley; Executive Committee —Messrs C. H. M'Kay, J. Hannan, G. V. Wilkinson, and A. F. Griffin; Match Committee, the president and secretary; Ladies’ Social Committee, Mesdames L. Mann and D. F. Macdonald. The opening day was fixed for Wednesday, April 15. The president extended an invitation on behalf of himself and his wife, to all members, to partake of afternoon tea on that occasion. The question of engaging a professional coach was discussed; finally it was left in the hands of the committee. The Special Committee set up early in the season to report on the possibility of adopting new links, right in the town, furnished a statement giving the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed area. It was recommended that the Frankton links continue to be the club’s official playing ground. This report was adopted. It was resolved that the £SO subsidy voted by the Government Tourist Department on a f for f basis for improvements to the links be spent wholly or partially this season on re-turfing the greens. It was decided that six greens be undertaken almost immediately.

Miss M. Hunter and Miss Leslie were proposed for membership of the club. _ The fees for new members for the incoming season only were reduced to: Men. £1 Is; ladies, 10s Cd. WOMEN’S DIVISION. Miss Reid and Miss M'Millan, of the Home Science Extension Bureau, Dunedin, addressed a meeting of the womens division of the Farmers’ Union here on Friday evening, Mrs J. E. O’Connell presiding. Miss Reid gave a fine exposition of what the bureau stood for in relation to the women in the country districts, and she invited members to lay their problems before the directors of the service so that their advice and assistance might be made available to them. Miss M'Millan gav e a most interesting and instructive address and demonstration of dress form. At the conclusion of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was passed to both speakers. OBITUARY. Mrs Ann Creighton, wife of Mr Terence Creighton, of Queenstown, died in the Southland Hospital last Friday morning, following on an operation for an internal growth. Mrs Creighton had only been indisposed for a month prior to her death. The surrounding circumstances are very sad, as she leaves a family of 10 children, six sons and four daughters, almost all of whom are of tender age. Mrs Creighton was born at Workington, Cumberland, England, where she was also married. She came out to the Dominion 16 years ago. and since then she had | lived at Queenstown. The remains were brought from Invercargill' on Saturday and interred in the local cemetery on Sunday afternoon, the Rev. Father Ardagh being the officiating priest. POLICE TRANSFER. Constable T. G. Dunn, of Queenstown, has been advised of his promotion to the rank of sergeant at Auckland. Constable Dunn came to Queenstown from Ashburton over nine years ago. He joined the police force in Wellington in 1908, his first move out being to Masterton, then to the West Coast. Subsequently he returned to Wellington as a member of the mounted police, whence he was transferred to Ashburton, which post he occupied for six years prior to coming to Queenstown. During his term of service here he has earned the respect and esteem of the people of Wakatipu, and his departure is regretted. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND. The local Earthquake Relief Fund has this week reached, £247 3s 4d. LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL, At the meeting of \the Lake County Council on Thursday it was resolved that the council waive its right to its costs in connection with the Government commission of inquiry into the petitions of some of the ratepayers of Kingston Riding and of the Southland County Council that portion of the riding he included in the Oreti Riding of Southland County. The commission’s finding was in effect that no change he made; and that the C( -I s ‘' B the commission be borne equally by the petitioners of Kingston Riding and the Southland County Council. In moving in the direction indicated the chairman (Cr Leo Lee) said ha considered it would be a gesture of good feeling and would, he hoped, make for amity and goodwill in the county. ~ It was resolved to discontinue the payments for small birds’ eggs and heads, and to supply settlers with bird poison at cost price. It was considered this method would prove more effective in the destruction of the pest. ♦ ... The member for Kingston Riding (Or MUaughan) was appointed to confer with the member for Oreti Riding of Southland County (Cr G. Wraytt) regarding the proposed new bridge over the Mataura River at the county boundary, and report to next meeting. The Public Hall Committee, Lower Shotover, was granted a license .for the hall just erected there. - . Thomas Davidson sent in his resignation from the offices of county ranger and dog tax registrar; and the county inspector (James Powell) was appointed in his place. . , Slaughterhouse licenses were granted Messrs E. F. Bloxham (Arrowtown), W. Gordon (Arthur’s Point), and James M'Donald (Wharehuanui). The application of Eustace Saunders (Gibbston) was also granted conditionally on his conforming to the provisions of the Act regarding advertising. REGATTA CLUB. Very satisfactory entries have been received for the annual regatta on Lake Wakatipu on Easter Saturday. The arrangements for the big aquatic event are well in hand and, provided the water is smooth and the weather fine, the:fixture should prove very successful.
