THE MAYORAL ELECTION

TO THE EDITOB. Sib, —With reference to the suggestions of “ Audax/' “ Observer/' and “ Ratepayer ” in your recent issues that Mr R. S. Black should allow Or Scott a “walkover " for the mayoralty, permit me to say that during the 19 years for which Cr Scott has been associated with the municipul affairs three Mayors have been returned unopposed, whilst more than one have served double terms. Surely, therefore, the day is past for the employment of this type of electioneering. The present Mayor has the vital administrative questions in hand, and surely, at a time when experience is essential to the good government of our affairs, the management could be in no better hands. The term about to be _ completed has been fraught with difficulties hitherto not encountered —floods, unemployment, earthquake, etc. —and any Mayor emerging with hie colours still on top is surely worthy of the support of all anxious for the prosperity and stability of our_ city. As proof that my views are unbiased and impersonal, I append my full name, not a “ nom de plume.”— I am, etc., Walter W. Watt. April 1.
