A NEW ZEALAND CARLSBERG “ Exactly the same water as that from the famous Carlsberg Springs at Copenhagen! ” With these words Mr J. P. Spangenberg, the famous consulting brewers’ engineer to the Carlsberg Breweries, Copenhagen, Denmark, probably laid the foundations of a new industrial concern in Auckland, capable of employing a large staff of men with an annual wages bill of £IO,OOO per annum. This world-famous authority visited New Zealand recently at the express invitation of Lager Breweries (N.Z.), Ltd., for the purpose of finding a suitable water supply for the manufacture in New Zealand of genuine lager beer of low alcoholic content, and the remark given above was bis opinion after testing samples of water taken from artesian wells on Pigeon Mountain, Pakuranga. The importance of his discovery cannot be too highly estimated, as the Carlsberg Spring, to which he refers, is the water used for the manufacture of the world-famous Carlsberg Lager, and the fact that similar water has been located in New Zealand ensures the establishment of a large brewery in the vicinity of Pigeon Mountain, Pakuranga. The company will make its first announcement within the next few days, and this should prove of great interest. The net profit shows a decrease of slightly over £2OO, but the shareholders continue to receive a 10 per cent, dividend. The allocation of the year’s surplus approximates five-sixths to shareholders and one-sixth to reserves. Although the function that this company performs may not render its results susceptible to much fluctuation, the fact of its maintaining its rate of dividend at the present time, while not neglecting reserves, reflects creditably on the management. The total receipts come out at practically the same figure as that of the previous year, the deficiency in the traffic receipts having been made up by the larger revenue from interest. Fewer trips have meant the conveyance of a smaller number of passengers, but'the return per unit has increased, as the following columns show: — Traffic

The expenditure keeps remarkably even. Wages and salaries, at £5762, are up by some f 100, while maintenance and repairs also show a slight rise. A saving of about £l6O has been effected in fuel in spite of the increase in the cost of coal. Altogether the expenditure is up by some £2OO, the special allowances towards premiums on investments and for income tax reserve having contributed materially to that end. When general expenses alone are placed opposite traffic receipts, the ratio works out as follows:

The position of the fixed assets is set out with the usual clearness. With the exception of land, which, at £1568, is unchanged, each has been subjected to depreciation at a fixed rate, full details being given. Road construction predominates, but its present value of £10,374 shows the steady reduction that has taken place in late years. Plant and machinery have absorbed £690 in capital expenditure, due perhaps chiefly to the installation of the automatic stoking device, the benefit of which should continue to be felt in the future. This addition more than counteracts the 6 per cent, allowance for wastage, the net book value being raised to £4753. Rolling stock (£1989) and buildings (£1363) are again reduced by the amounts of their respective allowances, no_ additions having been made to them during the period. As a provision of £998 has been applied to fixed assets aggregating £21,061, all ordinary wastage should be fully provided for. The liquid assets are remarkable for the large proportion held in cash or its equivalent. Out of a total of £10,269, there is £8143 held either in cash or giltedged securities, leaving £2028 represented by stock, and £9B by sundry debtors. Credit occupies a small part in the company’s affairs, the great bulk of the transactions being for immediate cash. Financing is not hampered by any large amount tied up in sundry debtors, the majority of those that appear in the balance_ sheet being probably payments for certain expenditure made in advance. Stock holds more, but even in relation to it the cash assets stand in the proportion approximately of four to one. Investments in Government and municipal securities absorb £6619. after some writing down has taken place in the figures of the former. Reserves continue to mount, the increase at this time being approximately £l9l. The sum of £235 available out of the net surplus has been cut down by the withdrawal of the income tax reserve that appeared at January, 1930. The contribution of £lo7'towards income tax reserve on account of the past year has apparently been included under sundry creditors on this occasion. General reserve is increased to £12,000, partly at the expense of the floating balance, which, notwithstanding its depletion both now and 12 months ago, holds £5240. Sundry creditors have risen to £485, but it would seem that the heading does not entirely represent indebtedness. In any case, all liabilities are well covered by the bank balance, which is in the happy position of being augmented regularly by the takings. On an average of 3746 passengers carried per diem, the stream of money into bank should flow fairly steadily.
