CRICKET.

SENIOR COMPETITION. TWO GOOD RECOVERIES. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS SCORE WELL. The outstanding features of the senior cricket competition which was continued in beautiful weather on Saturday, were good recoveries by Old Boys and Carisbrook, and Christian Brothers’ tall scoring against Dunedin. Old Boys had lost nine for 145 against Grange when Holden and Smith became associated in a partnership which took the score to 208. Holden scored 53 and Smith 27 not out, Dickinson’s 39 being the only score of note. Bush, the ex-Aucklander, took three for 37. Garisbrook had lost eight for 128, when Hawksworth and Aitken became associated. The ninth wicket well at 244 and the tenth at 272. Hawkesworth (68), Aitken (38 not out), and Nimmo (24) were the successful batsmen. Allen took four for 37. Christian Brothers scored 273 against Dunedin, the principal contributors being Lynch (68), V. M'Carten (55), and V. Cusack (52). Badcock took five for 38.

GARISBROOK v. ALBION, The match between Garisbrook and Albion was commenced on the main ground at Logan Park, where the former batted first, the wicket and outfield being in excellent order. After a quarter of an hour’s play, Dunning, who opened with Blunt, was bowled by Silver, after making 24. 28—1—24. Shortly after. Groves, the new-comer, fell a victim to a good one from Allen, which bowled him. 63 2—19. D. Smith came in, and no runs had been added to the score, when, after 45 minutes’ play. Blunt was bowled by M'Haffie. 63—3—18. Smith was joined by Priest, and the batsmen played the bowling with confidence, until Priest stepped forward to one from Silver, which broke in from the off and bowled him. 89 —4 —9. D. Smith brought the century up with a drive through the covers for a single off M'Haffie, and two balls later survived an appeal for a catch behind the wickets oft Allen. He did not last much longer, however, as he stepped in front of Allen’s next''ball and was out Ibw. 100 —5 —19. He played a fairly bright innings, although it was not characterised by the dash and finish which he ( displayed in the Otago-Southland match. D. Allan came in, and Silver was brought on at the town end in order to secure the advantage of a fresh breeze, which had sprung up. Allen captured another wicket when he bowled Allan with a ball which beat the batsman badly. ■ 102 —6 —2. Cox, the left-hander, went to the wickets, and the scoring became very slow. Smith was unlucky enough to slip when running between the wickets, and was run out. 128 —7 —16. With the first ball of his next over Silver clean bowled Cox. 128 —B—lo.8 —10. After the tea adjournment Hawkesworth and Aitken were the batsmen, and played fairly confidently to the bowling of Silver and Shepherd. M'Haffie relieved Silver, and Allen was brought on in place of Shepherd. Hawkesworth, who was then playing very confidently, lifted Shepherd to the square-leg fence, and in the next over Aitken glided M'Haffie to fine-leg- for 4. Duncan came on to bowl slow breaks, putting two men in the long field, but Hawkesworth placed the second ball well out of their reach for the first six of the match. Shepherd was given another chance with the ball, and Aitken glanced his second to fine-leg for a pretty 4. With a 3 to leg in Shepherd’s next over, Hawkesworth brought the second century up. A 4 and a 3 to Hawkesworth in the next two overs saw him pass 50, and Aitken reached 30 with a cut for 3. M'Haffie replaced Shepherd, and Hawkesworth lifted his first ball over the square leg fence for 6. He stepped in front of a ball in the next over, however, and was given out Ibw. 244 —9—68. The partnership had realised 116 runs at the time when the side was most in need of them, and turned what looked like being a. poor score into one which Albion will have some trouble in passing. Nimmo joined Aitken, and commenced vigorously, driving M'Haffie straight foi - a boundary. Allen came on, and bowled for the “ country,” M'Haffie making a great effort, to reach the first ball, which was skied by Nimmo, who took advantage of the slow bowling to drop the ball in all parts of the field, until Silver got under one and held it. The ifmings closed at 5.35 for 272 runs, the last man having made 24. Aitken carried his bat for a 38 full of merit. Shepherd and Miller opened for Albion, the former taking, strike to Nimmo, whose first ball he drove to mid on for 3. Off the next ball Miller was missed by Dunning at second slip. The last-named took the ball at-the other end. The runs were coming freely, and for Shepherd the bowling had no terrors, as he cut. pulled, and drove with equal vigour. With the score at 32, after 18 minutes’ play, Blunt relieved Nimmo, only a single coming from an over against Shepherd. The batsman was missed off Dunning by Allan at second slip in the next over —a difficult chance. Miller reached double figures by pulling Blunt to the square leg pickets, and in the next over Shepherd ■turned one from Dunning uppishly to the leg for Cox to take a safe catch. 43 —1— 29. Allen was the new-comer, and played carefully to Dunning, who was bowling a good length. In the next over Blunt got Miller Ibw with his well-known straight one. 49—2—17. Barron joined Allen, and lifted Dunning to the square leg fence. Nimmo replaced Dunning with five minutes to go, and the latter dropped one from Allen in the slips. The innings closed without further incident, with the score at 66 for two wickets. y The following are the scores: — GARISBROOK. & First Innings. CHRISTIAN BROTHERS v. DUNEDIN. Christian Brothers and Dunedin met at Logan Park where the wicket was good. Christian Brothers won the toss and batted, compiling 273 against some of the strongest bowling in the competition. Two wickets were lost quickly at the start, but a partnership between Lynch and Blair considerably improved the position. Blair was defeated at 29, but Lynch went on to score 68 in excellent style, his fine driving being the feature of his innings. Another productive partnership began when V. M'Carten and V. Cusack, two young batsmen, became associated. At the start they played very carefully, so carefully, in fact, that Dunedin began to use slow bowlers to tempt them, and a great deal of loose stuff was sent down. The batsmen began to take advantage ofit, and sixes were not infrequent. Both batsmen passed the half century before being dismissed; Badcock was the only Dunedin bowler to show his true form, and he secured the fine average of 5 for 38. The fielding generally was weak.

OLD BOYS v. GRANGE. Gale and Moloney gave Old Boys a good start in their match against Grange at the North Ground. They withstood the bowling of Lemin and Elmes until 40 runs had been scored, Gale then being bowled by Elmes with a score of 21. Only three had been added when Elmes also skittled Moloney, who had made 19. A partnership between Cherry and Dickinson carried the total to 69, Dickinson hitting out in good style. Cherry had scored only four when smart fielding and an accurate return by M'Mullan: resulted in his being run out. Alloo joined Dickinson, and the position looked promising when the century was brought up with only three wickets down. At 101, however, Dickinson was bowled, his score being 39. Then Bush, the ex-Aucklander, a medium-pace bowler, took a hand in the destruction, and he disposed of Alloo at 103, Giles at 108, and Harraway without any addition to the score. Holden partnered Leader and assisted him to take the score to 125 for the eighth wicket, when Leader was’ dismissed, and M'Rae helped Holden to take the score to 145 for the ninth wicket. Grange’s chances seemed rosy when Smith partnered Holden, but the bowling was faced stubbornly, the score at the adjournment at 4.15 being 163. On the resumption the batsmen again began to score steadily, and frequent changes of bowling had no effect, the pair being loudly applauded as 200 was brought up. At 208 Chettleburgh sent up a ball which landed halfway up the wicket, Holden being bowled after the second bounce in trying to pull it to leg. He had played a fine and ehanceless innings for 53, giving everything the full face of the bat. Smith, who made 27, was content to play the rock game, but as he hit out at an occasional loose one his score was composed mainly of fours. Not a single chance "was given during an excellent fighting partnership, which added 63. Grange started badly, losing three for 22. A partnership between Knight and M'Mullan, however, carried the score to 75 before “stumps.” Scores:— OLD BOYS. First Innings.
