CRICKET OVERSEAS

THE M.C.C. TEAM.

Tp FIFTH TEST MATCH. (United Press Association.) (By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright) DURBAN, February 21., (Received Feb. 22, at 5.5 p.m.) Play in the fifth test match, which was commenced to-day, was curtailed to 80 minutes owing torain. Chapman won the toss, and put in South Africa on a drying wicket. "The start 'was delayed for 20 minutes because the bails were of incorrect size, owing to the manufacturer’s mistake. It was found that every combination of bails available made the wickets 94 inches wide, instead of the regulation 9 inches. Finally it was decided to cut down the bails. Chapman lodged a complaint with the South African Board of Control, which acknowledges that the complaint is legitimate, as the delay might have had a serious effect on Chapman’s tactics. Chapman relied mainly on his spin bowlers, who were supported by such good fieldings that Siedle and Mitchell were able to score only 27 in an hour. Tate was the most dangerous bowler. Following are the scores:— SOUTH AFRICA. First Innings. Mitchell, not out 23 Seidle, not out 9 Total for no wickets .. .. 32 The English team is as follows: — Chapman, Wyatt, Hammond, Leyland, Hendren, Turnbull, Farrimond, Tate, Voce, White, Peebles. South Africa won the first test by .28 runs, and the second and third, were drawn. FIFTH TEST MATCH. THE WEST INDIES’ TEAM. SYDNEY, February 22., (Received Feb. 22, at 8 p.m.) Bright snappy batting on a perfect wicket and in genial sunshine marked the West Indies first -innings on Sydney Cricket Ground to-day. The New South Wales bowlers, with the exception of M'Cabe and Chilvers, were unimpressive, and the fielding was loose,_ very many runs being given to the visitors from overthrows. The fieldsmen were badly placed. Roach, Headley,, and Constantine gave 10,000 spectators many thrills while stealing runs by splendid running between the wickets, Headley at last losing his wicket in this manner. Rain occurred at 5.40, and play ceased for the day. Following are the scores: WEST INDIES. First Innings. Roach, b Theak 55 Martin, b M'Quirk ..
