PERSONAL.
Mr J. J. Kingston, manager of the South British Insurance Company’s Auckland branch, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. Dr Thomson, of Christchurch, and formerly of Dunedin, is at present paying a visit to this city. Captain Coll M'Donald and Mr W. J. Bardsley left yesterday for Wellington on Harbour Board business. Mr Campbell, Paterson, organising sharebroker for the new Lager Breweries, arrived in Dunedin yesterday morning from Auckland and is staying at the Grand Hotel. At the monthly meeting of the Otago High Schools Board, which was held yesterday, Mr J. C. Stephens was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Mr J. J. Mallard was elected treasurer. Mr W. B. Cameron, of Palmerston North, arrived by yesterday’s express to spend a few days in Dunedin. The Rev. W. Walker arrived last evening to attend the Methodist Conference. Other visitors well known to the Dunedin public, including the Rev. W. A. Sinclair, the Rev. Clarence Eaton, and the Rev. Percy Paris, also arrived by the second express last evening. The Rev. J. R. Metcalfe, of the Solomon Islands, is at present on a visit to Dunedin. > At the first monthly meeting for the year of the Otago High Schools Board yesterday the Otago Education Board notified that it had re-appointed Messrs D. T. Fleming, M.L.C., and W. R. Brugh, as its representatives on the board. Leave of absence for one mouth on account of ill-health was granted to Cr Clark at the meeting of the City Council last night. It was decided to write to Cr Clark expressing the council's sympathy. At the meeting of the City Council last evening Crs Wilson, Scott, and Wilkinson were appointed to act as the council s representatives on the Dunedin ■ Fire Board. . . At yesterday’s monthly meeting or tne Otago High Schools’ Board, reference was made to the death of Mrs David Baxter, Lady Sidey’s mother, and the following resolution was carried:—“That the board extends to Lady Sidey and other relatives its sincere sympathy in the death of Mrs David Baxter, who in- 1920 established the David Baxter memorial bursaries for pupils of tbe Otago Boys’ and Girls High Schools.” , . Dr C. B. Maguire, medical suppnntendent of the Auckland Hospital for 20 years, has been afflicted by serious eye trouble, and on Tuesday be was granted a year’s leave of absence, during which he will visit England. The board and members expressed the utmost sympathy with Dr Maguire, and eulogised his services. An acting-superintendent will he appointed, and the whole position reviewed in a year (states a Pres Association telegram).
