MATERNITY ALLOWANCES.
TO THE EDITOB.
Sib, —Can you state the total cost of the encouragement (maternity dole) given to members of friendly societies, and which Government was responsible for placing this imposition upon the taxpayer? The audacity of some individuals is amazing—actually suggesting that payments should have been made retrospective. Since such a large per centage of our population is to-day a charge on the State, would it not be in the interests of all to inflict, for a few years, a fine, instead of making a grant? — I am, etc., R. S. Thompson. Wetherstones, February 16. [During the last financial year, maternity allowances to the amount of £35,404 was paid to members of approved friendly societies. The payments were made under the authority of the National Provident Fund Act, which was passed in 1910 during the regime of the Ward Government and amended in 1914 during the regime of the National Government in such a way as permitted friendly societies to contribute to the fund in respect of all or any of their members. — Ed.
