OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND JUNIORS CLOSE SCORING IN FIRST INNINGS. The junior cricket mqtch between Otago and Southland was begun at Carisbrook yesterday under ideal weather conditions. Southland won the toss and batted first. Only six runs had been scored when the first wicket fell, but when Bews joined Smith a partnership began which took the score to 77, of which Bews, who was bowled by Hughes, had scored 41 in good style. Hughes captured _ the next three wickets after the addition of only six runs, and five were down for 83. Then Smith, who had batted very slowly, taking two hours for his first 24, assisted Beal in taking the score to 128, when he was dismissed with a score of 45. Beal took his total to 26, and the innings closed for 153. Hughes (four for 19), Constable (three for 19), and Cahill (two for ll) were the most successful bowlers. Otago started badly, losing the first wicket at 16 and the second at 24. Simmers and Rennick carried the total to 47 for the third wicket, but the fourth fell; at 49 and the fifth at 51. A bright partnership between Rennick and Tomkinson added 39 for the sixth wicket, Torakiuson scoring 19. When Dixon was dismissed the total had been carried to 115 for seven wickets. At 123 Rennick, who had played an excellent innings for 46, was run out, and Cahill was bowled, with the addition of one. The last-Vicket partnership, in which M'Leod and Henderson were associated, ended when Otago’s total was one short of Southland’s, M'Leod being not out with 28. Mitchell secured the average with the good figures of five for 51. Southland’s second innings began with a-quarter of an hour to play, and at “stumps” two wickets had been lost for eight runs. THE TOUR OF ENGLAND. ARBITRARY ACTION OF COUNCIL. (■Pee United Press Association.) ROTORUA, February 18. The New Zealand Press Association directorate passed the following resolution:— ’’The directorate, having considered the refusal of the New Zealand Cricket Council to give official recognition to a representative of the Dominion press on the occasion of the tour of the New Zealand cricket team abroad, resolved that the public was entitled to the fullest information about the doings of the team in view of ’ the financial support that had been given the council and in the best interests of the game. The refusal of the council to accord full facilities to a press representative has made proper reporting of the tour impossible, and the association, in the public interests, emphatically protests against the arbitrary and unjustifiable action of the council.”
