CANADIAN APPOINTMENT. THE EARL OF BESSBOROUGH. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) OTTAWA, February 9. The Prime Minister (Mr R. B. Bepnett) announced to-day that the Earl of Besaborough bad been appointed Gov-ernor-General of Canada. THE KING’S APPROVAL. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, February 9. The King has approved of the appointment of the Earl .of Bessborough as Governor-General of Canada. ' The Earl of Bessborough, who is 50 years of age, has had a wide business experience. He was called to the Bar 27 years ago. Before succeeding to the earldom he sat in the Commons as the Conservative member for Cheltenham, and afterwards for Dover. During the war he served in Gallipoli and France. He married a French woman, the daughter of Baron de Ncuflize, and he and his family have organised one of the leading amateur dramatic societies in England. ’ Since the war he has developed many business interests.

Vere Brabazon Ponsonby, ninth Earl of Bessborough, was born in October, ISSO, and was educated at Harrow and Cambridge. He was called to the Bar, Inner Temple, in 1903. He entered politics in 190 G, and was Conservative member for Cheltenham in 1910, and represented Marylebone East in the L.C.C. from 1907 to 1910. He served in Gallipoli and in France. From 1913 to 1920 he was Conservative member for Dover. OFFERED TO DUKE OF ABERCORN, LONDON, February 9. (Received Feb. 10, at 8 pan.) An official statement from Government House, Belfast, announces that the King, on Mr Bennett’s recommendation, offered the Governor-Generalship of Canada to the Duke of Abercorn, but the latter felt that he should complete his second term of office in Ulster.
