“DOWN AND OUT.”

CHARGE OF ATTEMPTED SUICIDE (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND. January 26. As he was about to climb over the parapet of Grafton bridge on Saturday evening Richard William Bryant, aged 67, was caught by a passer-by and held until a constable arrived to take him into custody. To a charge of attempting to commit suicide preferred against him at the Police Court, Bryant nleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by John Martin that as he was walking across the bridge at 8 o’clock he saw Bryant place his hands on the parapet and commence to climb up. Witness caught hold of the accused and, with the assistance of a naval man, took him to the end of the bridge and held him there until a constable arrived. He said be was down and out. “ This man has 80 previous convictions and is no stranger to this court,” stated Detective Sergeant Kelly. “Like the poor, he is always with us—that is } of course, if ho doesn’t go over the bridge when he gets free.” The magistrate said a little hard work would not do Bryant any harm, and sent him to prison for one month.
