NORTH OTAGO.

OBSERVATION TOUR. The observation tour to the Waitaki dam, organised by the Railways “Department for the week-end, was again well patronised by visitors to the town ( and local residents. Two full buses made the trip, the route being via Duntroon and returning on the northern side of the Waitaki River via Haka and Redcliff. The Waitaki is at present,in flood, but progress at the works is being maintained and kept up to schedule. The facilities provided by the department are a boon to visitors, as they are enabled to see this huge hydro-electric undertaking, which is full of interest even to the layman, under comfortable and pleasant conditions. CRICKET. ALBION v. OAMARU. Albion won the toss on Saturday and elected td bat on a good wicket at School, with a fast outfield. The opening batsmen made a good start against the Oamaru att.uk A. Brooker reached 21 by sound batting, and Ottrey went for the bowling and scored 24 before being caught by Kent. Sampson played a straight bat to everything and made 15 slowly, when a ball from Milner, which kept low, found the wickets. Geddes and Davey joined in a prolific partnership until Geddes, in attempting to hook a ball, pulled it into his wicket, when he had 39 to his credit. Davey still gathered runs, and saw M'Laren and L. Brooker bowled with successive balls by Zimmerman, who was unlucky in not securing the hat trick, as Davey was dropped. Davey, however, was caught on the boundary at 40 in attempting to lift Milner out of the ground. The rest of the batsmen failed badly, the last five wickets, adding only 18 to the total, and the innings closed for 160 runs. Zimmerman and Milner bore the brunt of the Oamaru attack, both securing good averages. Uttley and Milner opened for Oamaru, but Uttley was bowled by Geddes after scoring a single.- Wilde-Browne did not get going, and Zimmerman, after scoring 14, was brilliantly caught and bowled by Geddes The bowler stopped the return high in the air and caught the ball as it fell; Calder joined Milner, and the pair amassed runs steadily until Rackley brought off another splendid catch, by holding a. low return from Milner, who .had reached 32. Calder also' fell victim to a batch shortly after, when his total read 35. Oamaru’s position was far from ■bright, but Hodge and K. Walton offered a resolute defence, and the last over of the day saw Hodge dismissed with a catch, leaving the side 31 runs to get with three wickets in hand, to win. The Albion bowling was steady throughout. Scores: — ALBION. First Innings. A. Brooker, b Zimmerman .. 21 Sampson, b Milner ... 15 Ottrey, c Kent, b K. At_ the Kakanui River, however, - anglers enjoyed fair sport, and some good baskets of trout were taken on the fly. The eel drive on the river proved so popular that the Acclimatisation Society has decided to hold another eel drive on Thursday next, when, given good weather conditions, it is anticipated that a large number of eels will be accounted for. A meeting of the executive of the North Otago Rugby Union was held last night. Mr G. B. Stevenson presided over a full attendance of members. The St. John Ambulance Brigade acknowledged with thanks the union’s grant of £5 ss. The North Otago Cricket Association wrote asking the union to co-operate with the association in the formation of a sports protection league in North Otago. Mr Palmer stated that the object was to assure that players paid club subscriptions before they were allowed to participate in the new season’s sports. It was decided to support the movement, and to inform the association accordingl>. The secretary was directed to write to the Agricultural and Pastoral Association pointing out the bad condition of the grounds, and asking the association to co-operate in the appointment of a joint groundsman. The annual meeting was fixed for March 12.

The sub-committee appointed to consider the question of a West Coast tour this season was requested to bring forward a report on the matter. The secretary was instructed to write to the Borough Council asking councillors to give due consideration to the claims of Rugby football before allotting the new sports ground at Reserve C. It was decided to hand over the Third Grade banner to St. Kevin’s, who had won it three times in succession, during the pleasure of the union. An amendment to hand it over unconditionally was lost. The financial statements for the year showed a loss of £57 on the year’s working so far as football matches were Concerned. Interest on debentures and deposits, etc., however, increased the receipts to such an extent that a net profit of £29 Is lOd was shown, of which £29 was transferred to the grounds trust fund, leaving Is lOd to be carried forward to the union’s funds. The gate receipts for the Mollison Cup fund amounted to £lO 7s, of which £lO was paid for banking the Oval, leaving a balance of £ls 11s 7d in the funds. The ground rent for the All Blacks-North Otago match amounted to £49 16s. The annual report submitted to the meeting stated, inter alia, that the past season was entirely satisfactory from the point of view of games, and the large number of players now taking part was an assurance o,f a successful future for ’the game in the district. Public patronage during the whole of the season was extremely poor, a very attractive list of representative fixtures failing to draw any interest from those not directly connected with the game. It was well recognised that this was entirely accounted for by the broadcasting of descriptions of the games played by the British team during its tour through the Dominion. Competition in the four grades was again keen, and the matches were well contested. * A total of 33 teams played under the control of the union, 25 of which competed locally and ? in the country. The ' Old Roys team won the senior and junior competitions, the Mollison Cup, the Clarke Shield, and the Ralph Cup, St. Kevin’s the Third Grade and Athletic the Fourth Grade competitions, each team being heartily congratulated by the union on its success. The Waitaki Sub-union again had everjj. reason to be proud of the standard of football reached by various teams. The country competition was controlled in an efficient manner, excellent football being displayed ‘in all games. The result was in doubt to the end of the season. The South School was congratulated on winning the primary school banner. _ An excellent standard of play was maintained in the representative matches, the results being no indication of the quality of the football displayed. The fixtures were perhaps the most attractive ever arranged under the jurisdiction of the union, including the first occasion on which a New Zealand team played in Oamaru. The showing of the local players well-merited the praise expressed by the New Zealand fifteen. The thanks of the union were again due to the Referees’ Association for the yeoman services given. After taking into consideration the numerous difficulties of the season, the financial position could only be regarded as being highly satisfactory. Feeling reference was made to the deaths of Mr Wise, Mr Andrew Smith, and Mr E. T. Olds. This being the last meeting of the Management Committee, the president (Mr G. R. Stevenson) thanked members for their support and assistance during the past two seasons, and expressed the hope that Mr A. Gilchrist would accept nomination for the position this coming season.
