EWART HOSPITAL.
PROVISION FOR T.B. CASES. OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY. (Special to Daily Times.) WELLINGTON, December 1. The formal opening of the new Ewart Tuberculosis Hospital took place this afternoon. _ The new hospital, which cost £26,800, will accommodate 65 patients. _Mr C. M. Luke, who has been associated with hospital work in Wellington for the past SO years, in declaring the new hospital open, spoke in eulogistic terms of the work of Dr John Ewart, who was for 21 years medical superintendent, and who, he was pleased to say, was with them that day as an honoured guest. Dr Ewart, in returning thanks for the complimentary remarks which had been made about his services, referred to the growth of the hospital from the time he took charge in 1889 till his resignation in 1910. When he was appointed superintendent, he said, there was accommodation for only 80 patients. Now there were 600 patients. In those days there were no specialists and there wjs no laboratory. Dr Ewart himself was 'the pathologist. The out-patient waiting room wag also the operating theatre.
Dr Ewart studied surgery under Dr Joseph Lister, afterwards Lord Lister, at Edinburgh. In 1876 he was one of the students who waited upon Lord Lister and requested him to remain in Edinburgh instead of going to London following the epoch-making discovery of Pasteur. Lister was then becoming famous in connection with the introduction of the system of antiseptic treatment in surgery.
