. BRAWL ON A PUNT. MAN SEVERELY WOUNDED. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, December 1. Charles Evans, aged 28, was shot in the abdomen by the captain of the Hnwkesbury River vehicle punt during a brawl on the vessel. Evans is on the point of death. He and five companions refused to pay the fees on the punt, and after wordy warfare a fierce fight commenced, the men attacking a deck ban I who was flung to the deck, kicked, ami punched. The captain, .seeing the deck hand being unmercifully battered, fired two shots over the men’s heads. As this had no effect a third shot was fired, and Evans fell. He was rushed to the hospital bleeding profusely. The five men were charged with assault. BIRTH RATE LAST YEAR. THE LOWEST ON RECORD, SYDNEY, December 1. (Received Dee. 1, at 10.30 p.m.) The Commonwealth Statistician reports that the birth rate tor Australia in 1929 was the lowest on record—namely, 20.31 per 1000 of population. The death rate was also very low, and the rate of natural increase by excess of births over deaths was equalled in very few countries.
