The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board wrote that the Benevolent Committee had confirmed arrangements that a further sum of £75 be granted to the St. Hilda Council in connection, with unemployment, provided the council subsidised the amount by £2s.—Received. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The foreman of works (Mr J. Clyma) reported on work done in the borough during the fortnight ended November 22, as follows Tar-sealing Calder street, 58 chains; Driver street, 29 chains; Young Patching and. sealing Victoria street, II chains, patching and sealing Victoria road, from Moreau street Jo Plunket street, and patching Victoria road from Prince Albert road to Moreau street; also patching streets. He suggested for the ensuing fortnight sealing footpaths, patching streets, etc., and patching and sealing Victoria road footpath from Prince Albert road to Mill street, at a cost of, say, £lo.—Adopted. UNEMPLOYMENT* In connection with a meeting that had been held in the afternoon in the City Council Chambers, notice of which had been sent jby the town clerk, Dunedin, the Mayor said that he had attended the meeting, and had pointed out 'that the council was employing 25 of the unemployed, and that the work would be carried on until after Christmas. It was doubtful what would happen after that, as they had no work left to be carried out. There were other public bodies in a sitailar position, . Cr Longworth said that the borough was in an unfortunate position in not having further work to be carried out. There wereaeveral proposals put forward at the meeting called to hear the Unemployment Commissioner, and the proposal of the Harbour Board would take a large amount. He was under the impression that local bodies had dons rather more than their share towards relieving unemployment. After hearing the address they must admit that by the method proposed local bodies would reap a benefit. For instance, if they were doing work of a permanent nature which would bo of - use, the Unemployment '' Board wag prepared to subsidise the cost of that work. At present they could not undertake work that would not bo completed before January. Cr Smiley said the whole thing seemed to be a canvass for providing work. One matter of interest to the council was in regard to. the grant the Hospital made to local bodies. It had been said that the Unemployment Board would subsidise to the extent of £2 for £l. If the Hospital Board was prepared to make an offer of £IOO, they would pick up £2OO from the Government, which would make the amount £3OO. The subject then dropped, GENERAL. It was mentioned that on race days week an exceptional number of motor vehicles had passed through the borough, and that the roads showed signs of wear. On the Saturday 251 cars, 88 taxis, 50 lorries, and 30 buses had-passed over Bay View road at Prince Albert road intersection between B a.m. and 12 noon.— Authority was given to the town clerk to investigate the matter of the City Corporation paying heavy traffic license fees on its buses.

The accounts passed for payment amounted to £1024 5s 6d. It 'was reported that the water consumption for the fortnight had been 4,711,000 gallons, and the cost £ll7 Ifie fid. The cost for the previous fortnights consumption had been £ll3 2s.
