CALDER MACKAY COMPANY.
BIRTHDAY PARTY. The Somerset Lounge was a scene of gaiety on Saturday night, when the Calder Mackay Company held its first birthday party. The guests were received by the hostess (Mrs Feme). who carried a sheaf of pansies presented by the girls of the staff. The manager (Mr Fernie) expressed the pleasure of all at the presence of the general manager (Mr Mackay). Replying to the toast of “The Company,” Mr Mackay stressed the point that the firm would prosper just in the measure that it rendered a real service to the community. The past year had been a difficult one, yet the company’s operations had been very successful, and they would therefore face the future with confidence. The speaker concluded by conveying greetings from the staff of the Christchurch branch. In proposing the toast of “Calder Mackay Company, Dunedin.” Mr Mackay expressed the appreciation of the directors of the work of the manager (Mr Fernie). The confidence reposed in him had been fully justified, and under his management there was no reason why 1031 should not be a record year. In reply, Mr Fernie paid a tribute to the loyalty and co-operation of the staff. Throughout the year all had given of their very best, and the success achieved was in no small measure due to their combined efforts.
At the conclusion of the dinner the party adjourned to His Majesty’s Theatre to witness the final performance of “ The Belle of New York."
—Vienna has such a mania for politeness that a new automatic machine has just been produced that supplies packets of sweete in return for coins, and says sweetly : “ Thank you; please favour me again.”
