AROUND THE WORLD.

TRAMPER’S SECOND EFFORT. On his second walking tour around the world in an attempt to win a wager of £7OOO, Mr Maurice Vancam, who styles himself “ King of Tramps," arrived in Dunedin last evening, having completed, since the commencement of uia journey, 96.500 miles. Mr Vancam started from Vancouver in 1925 with only a paper suit, no money, and under the pledge that to_ win his wager he must tramp 100,000 miles round the- world and return to his starting place before June 19, 1931. This is his second attempt, his first having been undertaken in 1911, On that occasion, however, although he covered the required number of miles, he was unsuccessful, as he returned to Vancouver 10 weeks behind his scheduled time, principally on account of having been held prisoner for nine months by the Bolshevists in Siberia. An interesting record of the traveller’s journeyings is given by his. record books —llß of them—containing over 200,000 signatures, 70,738 municipal seals, and many thousand of stamps and business places—a unique collection of which, perhaps, there is not the like in existence. Mr Vancam, on this, his second attempt, is confident of success, as he is well ahead of time, and has roughly only another 3500 miles to cover in New Zealand and South Africa before he joins the steamer for Vancouver. After leaving Dunedin he will tramp to Invercargill, back through Central Otago to the West Coast, and thence to Christchurch.
