PRIME MINISTER’S ACTIVITIES.

SOME IMPRESSIONS. (Fnoii Ode Own Coeeespondent.) LONDON, October 23. Both Mr and Mrs Forbes enjoyed their week-end at Chequers, the British Prime Minister’s country residence. They were greatly interested in the collection of paintings and the many things of historical importance. Sunday was a fine autumn day, and it was a great pleasure for the visitors to walk in tbe beautiful grounds. There were informal conversations on Imperial matters, but politics were barred. Both Mr and Mrs Forbes say they found Mr MacDonald and Miss MacDonald the most charming of hosts. “ The Dairy Show,” said Mr Forbes, referring to bis experiences yesterday, “ was one of the places I intended to see, especially as Lord Bledisloe, the GovernorGeneral, was so closely connected with the Association’s activities, and was its president for a number of years. He had given some fine cups, which I saw yesterday. It was a very good show. T was interested in the dairy equipment and the dairy cattle, and I saw the cow which is supposed to have made the record of the world in yielding 41b lOJoz of butterfat for a day’s milking. " I attended a reception in the afternoon, where Mr S. R. Whitley had arranged a reunion of many of the farmers who toured New Zealand some months ago. They expressed their great appreciation of their experiences in New Zealand, and of the hospitality shown to them, and they are looking forward to the visit of New Zealand, Australian, and South African farmers next year. They were making preparations, they said, to return some of the hospitality they had received in the Dominion.”

Mrs Forbes also attended this reception. She mentioned a very pleasant formality. Members of the touring party presented to their leader, Mr Whitley, a handsome album containing a large collection of photographs taken when the party was in New Zealand. Mrs Whitley also received a present which was "just what she wanted.” .

The Prime Minister also spoke of his visit to the Motor Show, The manufacturers, he said, were all looking to improve their trade with New Zealand, and seemed to be endeavouring to meet the requirements of the market. Numbers of the makers seemed quite determined that they were going to get a much larger proportion of the business than they had at present.

Speaking of the Conference, Mr Forbes said it was now quite recognised that the British Government had closed the door to any further discussion on the subject of tariffs on British imports. The Conference would probably continue until the middle of November.
