URGENT REQUESTS FOR RELEASE. PETITION LISTS LARGELY SIGNED, (Peb United Press Association.)

NEW PLYMOUTH, November 30. About 100 persons crowded round the doors and 40 more were counted as they left _ the hall on Saturday night after passing unanimously resolutions asking for the immediate release from prison of Abraham Wally Mahomed Salaman, the Indian herbalist, who was recently found guilty and sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment on a charge of manslaughter of a boy who was taken to him for treatment for diabetes, The meeting was intensely in earnest, the remarks of the speakers being freely punctuated' with applause. The following resolutions were directed to be telegraphed to the Acting Prime Minister (Mr E. A. Ransom), the Leader of the Opposition (Mr J. G. Coates), and the Leader of the Labour Party (Mr H. E. Holland)■ “ That Salaman, in the unanimous opinion of this meeting should be released from gaol at once. With all due respect to the Chief Justice, Salaman is, in Uie opinion of this meeting, no charlatan. The meeting respectfully asks that the Minister of Justice should immediately release Salaman, whose imprisonment is a great handicap and hardship to hundreds of sufferers, who were being treated by him and now sadly need his help.” <! That the necessary action be - taken by means of petitioning' the authorities and otherwise in order to bring about the release of Salaman with as little delay as possible.” “That a committee of five be appointed to draft a petition and otherwise to carry into effect the desire of the meeting.” “That having been informed that the police have intimated their intention of proceeding with certain minor charges against Salaman in the Magistrate’s Court this meeting respectfully suggests that the Minister of Justice should give the necessary instructions that these charges he not proceeded with in view of Salaman’s conviction on;a major charge.” Petition lists praying for Salaman's immediate release were distributed and largely signed. TELEGRAM FROM PRIME MINISTER (Peb United Press Association.) WOODVILLE, November 30. ihe chairman of a meeting held at Woodville on Thursday night sent a telegall} to the Acting Prime Minister (Mr E. A. Ransom) containing a resolution passed in reference to Abraham Salaman, and has received the following reply:—• lour wire, to hand regarding Salaman. 1 nave submitted the contents to the Minister of Justice, together with my recommendation. I had the opportunity of interviewing several who had received helpful treatment, and was impressed most favourably with their representations.”
