PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN'S MISSIONARY UNION.

ANNUAL ORIENTAL SALE. .i ’ The ladies connected with the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union have evidently been extremely busy during the past month or two making preparation for their annual sale, in which Oriental productions play a big part. It is because Oriental fabrics and brasses occupy a prominent place in the sale that it is -named an annual Oriental sale. The sale was opened in Knox Sunday School Hall at 11 o’clock yesterday morning, and was continued throughout the day, and a glance at the many tables was sufficient evidence of the indefatigable energy of members in having got such a collection -of valuables together. The. goods displayed on the tables were not of the same character as those met with at most church sales of work, where the ’ ornamental gives way to the useful. In this instance there were both useful and ornamental articles in abundance for sale, and amongst them many would be regarded as articles of vertu, of artistic design, and of considerable value. This was especially noticeable amongst the brasses, many of which were of unique design and distinctly Eastern. The list of tables is a lengthy one.. There were tables containing brass, ivory, tapestry, lawn handkerchiefs, linen in many directions, supper and tablecloths, serviettes, oblongs, pillowshams, and pillow cases, tea cosies and runners, babies’ clothing, silk underwear, luncheon sets, laces, and silk by the yard. The display of brasswarc was specially good, and many of the articles disposed of should have reached a good price. There was a great variety of vegetables and preserves on one stall. In a pastry direction there was an abundance, and on the same stall confectionery was plentiful and varied in description. One of the most prominent stalls contained tapestry, and many works of elegant and artistic design. Close by were ivories and amber decorative articles that, on inquiry, were not to be bought for a small sum. Amongst many other things were Chinese silk shawls, “tie and dye” articles, and of linen there was a full and comprehensive supply. The official opening was performed by the Rev. D. C. Herron in the afternoon, when there .was a large attendance present. The sale was brought to a conclusion late in the afternoon.
